BRYAN — It’s the trifecta for John Tyler in February.

Two weeks ago, receiver Fred Ross was chosen All-East Texas Most Valuable Player of the Year with Tyus Boswer receiving All-ET Defensive Player of the year honors; then last week quarterback Greg Ward was named the Class 4A Built Ford Tough Player of the Year.

This week it is Tyus Bowser’s turn again.

The senior defensive lineman was voted Defensive Player of the Year by the Texas Sportswriter’s Association on the 62nd annual Collin Street Bakery/TSWA Class 4A All-State Football Team.

Bowser shared the honor with Lancaster linemen Daeshon Hall.

Bowser is also the third John Tyler player to receive TSWA Defensive Player of the Year honors, joining Marc Broyles (1995) and David Warren (1996, 97).

Bowser posted 22 sacks and 33 tackles for loss on the way to becoming the All-East Texas Defensive Player of the Year. He notched five sacks against Whitehouse and tackled the quarterback seven times in an area round win over Wylie.

The 6-3, 215-pound Bowser, who signed with Houston, scored four different ways during a memorable season: rushing, passing, receiving and on defense (fumble recovery). Bowser even handled deep snapping duties and used his 4.5-second sped to average more than 18 yards on kickoff returns.

Joining him as TSWA first teamers are Ward (quarterback) and Ross (receiver) with Lions junior Terry Ausborne chosen second-team defensive back.

Joe Willis of Cedar Park was Coach of the Year.

The 6-6, 230-pound Hall had 24 tackles for losses and 16 sacks.

Denton Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard was the offensive player of the year.

The 6-2, 180-pound Heard threw for 2,090 yards and 17 touchdowns in leading Guyer to the Division I state title. Heard, who is committed to The University of Texas, also rushed for 2,138 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Corsicana guard Jeff Jordan was a first-teamer as well.

Also on the second team were Mount Pleasant wide receiver Kadarrius Cannon, Sulphur Springs running back Willy Ivery,

On the third team were Nacogdoches senior center Jacob Bragg, Sulphur Springs quarterback Brad Macek and Whitehouse sophomore defensive back Justin Dunning.

Several East Texans earned honorable mention on the squad including John Tyler’s Noe Diaz as placekicker and punter and teammates Chris Mobley at defensive tackle, Richard Gipson at linebacker and Traven Johnson at defensive back.

Whitehouse receivers Dylan Cantrell and Coleman Patterson earned honorable mention as well as QB Patrick Mahomes, placekicker Destin Wilkins and defensive back Colby Campbell.

Lindale’s Luc Swimberghe of Lindale earned honorable mention as punter.

Jacksonville’s Darrel Minifee was HM at defensive back as was Marshall’s Marek Reyes of Marshall.

Other HM candidates were Sulphur Springs tackle Jennfer Jackson, RB Buddy Ivery, DB Larry Pryor and WR Cole Hill, Hallsville OT Hayden Wall, LB Cayden Ferrill and DT Colby Bradford, Corsicana center Chris Jones and DT Jarrett Hall, Mount Pleasant quarterback Montravious James and Texas High DT Jonathan Hunt and LB Anthony Rhone.
