April 4: Arp’s Guy Lewis coaches the University of Houston to basketball greatness

Arp native Guy Lewis coached the University of Houston to 27 consecutive winning seasons in basketball and five appearances in the NCAA Final Four.

On this date in 1983, his Cougars lost in the national title game to North Carolina State on a last-second bucket. The Cougars also lost in the finals the following year.

His teams also made it to the final four in 1967, 1968 and 1982. In 2007, He was inducted into National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

Lewis was one of the first college coaches to recruit black players. His teams were known for their speed and ability to dunk the ball.
