The Smith County Commissioners Court on Tuesday appointed Danny Brown as the new Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace following an executive session.

Brown, a veteran of law enforcement with over 33 years of experience, will succeed Judge Jon Johnson, who is retiring after 35 years in criminal justice.

“It’s a very difficult decision. We had four excellent candidates and I’m glad we had such great choices,” Precinct 3 Commissioner Terry Phillips said.

Brown, who ran for the position in 2018 but lost to Johnson, is currently the Chief of Police for the Tyler ISD Police Department, overseeing one of the county’s largest police departments. His career includes 21 years with the Tyler Police Department and time as a special investigator with Child Protective Services.

A Lindale resident for 20 years, Brown is eager to serve the community he calls home.

“I have always driven to Tyler to work. I want to serve in Lindale where I have lived all these years,” Brown said.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Brown and his wife have been foster parents since 2015, adopting four children. They also own two businesses in Lindale, including a daycare and a visitation center for children in CPS care.

Brown will officially take over the role Oct. 1 after Judge Johnson’s retirement becomes effective Sept. 30.
