Chapel Hill quarterback Demetrius Brisbon tosses a pass during a game at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

It wasn’t a Monster Mash, but a Bulldog Clash.

The result was a Texas High School football classic — Chapel Hill scoring a 41-35 two overtime victory over district rival Kilgore on Friday night before a packed house at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.

Samari Willis scored on a TD run in the second OT period and Chapel Hill clinched the Class 4A Division I regional win when Jayvin Mayfield made an over-the-shoulder interception in the end zone to halt Kilgore’s attempt to tie, setting off a wild celebration on the Blue & Gold sideline.

“Been telling them last year third round was unbelievable, to practice on Thanksgiving and go to the third round,” Chapel Hill coach Jeff Riordan said. “All offseason I told them that’s the floor. That’s where we were last year. We’ve got to do better than what we did last year.

“Now we’ve got 10 wins. Playing in the fourth round. Teams they remember play in December. Ain’t no turkeys after Thanksgiving. All them sayings I’ve been telling them. These kids just believe and fight.”

Chapel Hill (10-3) advances to the fourth round to play Orange Little Cypress-Mauriceville (11-2), a 24-21 upset winner over El Campo on Friday. The Region III final is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cypress’ Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.

Kilgore saw its nine-game winning streak snapped as Ragin’ Red finishes the second at 11-2, along with the District 9-4A Division I title.

Chapel Hill’s last loss was a 41-20 defeat to Kilgore on Oct. 15. The CHHS Bulldogs have won five straight.

Both sides had spectacular plays and performances throughout. There were big plays after big plays.

CH freshman running back Rickey Stewart rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. CHHS freshman quarterback Demetrius Brisbon Jr. rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns on 15 attempts. He also threw for 88 yards.

Willis had two touchdowns, rushing for 86 yards on nine totes.

“It feels good because we didn’t get to go last year,” Willis said of advancing. “We lost in the third last year. We had something different this year.”

Kilgore’s Davin Rider had his fifth 200-plus rushing performance of the season. He gained 246 yards and scored on a 31-yard TD on 34 carries.

Kilgore QB Da’Marion Van Zandt connected on 15 of 27 passing attempts for 189 yards and two TD passes — 27 and 57 to Jermaine Roney.

Chapel Hill fell behind 17-0 and 27-21 before taking a 35-27 lead in the fourth period. Then Kilgore rallied for a TD and a two-point conversion to force overtime.

In the first OT, both teams attempted field goals only to be denied. Kilgore’s 42-yard field goal attempt appeared to be blocked by CH, while a high snap on the Chapel Hill 35-yard FG attempt did not give Adolfo Tamayo a shot for the win.

Thus, the second OT was needed. Brisbon bolted for 19 yards to the 6. On the next play, Willis bulled over into the end zone. The try for two was intercepted by Corey Rider, leaving CH ahead 41-35 with Kilgore next up.

Three runs by Davin Rider moved the ball to the CH 13, but Kilgore tried for a pass in the right corner of the end zone where Mayfield made the pick.

“I just started backpedaling,” Mayfield said. “I felt like he was running a fade. I kind of played him and played the ball. And I seen the ball go up, and I knew I had to make a play on the ball to win the game. When I caught it, I looked down at my feet and I saw they were close to the end zone, but I knew it was in.

“We knew we had to beat these dudes to play again in December. It’s just a dream come true.”

Linebacker Brack Dyer led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles, along with a fumble recovery. Other top tacklers were JK Davis (9), Jatavion Watson (8), Devin Howland (8) and Daniel Waddleton (7). Solomon Macfoy, Willis and Ladainian Mosley added six tackles each.

Keviyan Huddleston had three sacks for the Bulldogs.

Kilgore opened the game with an onside kick with Zalen Matthews recovering. Kilgore drove to the 13 and Chris Baldazo booted a 30-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead at 7:50.

After a three-and-out by the Blue Bulldogs, Kilgore drove 84 yards on nine plays, topped off by a 27-yard TD poass from Van Zandt to Roney. Baldazo added the PAT and the Red Bulldogs led 10-0.

Kilgore tried another onside kick, but Mayfield recovered for CH.

Chapel Hill drove to the Kilgore 29, but came up short on fourth down.

It took the Ragin’ Red four plays to find the end zone as Van Zandt connected with Roney for a 57-yard TD. The PAT was good by Baldazo and Kilgore led 17-0 with 8:46 to go in the second quarter.

Chapel Hill then got going, scoring three straight touchdowns in the final 5:30 of the half.

The Blue Bulldogs drove 81 yards on 10 plays with Brisbon topping it off with a 4-yard run. Tamayo kicked the extra point as CH pulled within 21-7 with 5:30 showing in the second quarter.

On the pooch kick, Chapel Hill’s Waddleton recovered a fumble and the Blue ‘Dawgs set up shop at the KHS 30-yard line. Three plays later, Stewart dashed into the end zone from the 18. Tamayo’s PAT brought CH within 17-14 with 4:33 showing.

Kilgore drove to the CH 29 but on a fourth-and-7, Huddleston came up with a sack for a minus 7.

Chapel Hill took over with 2:31 on the clock and drove down the field, with a key 23-yard pass from Brisbon to Tyson Berry. Stewart found pay dirt on a 1-yard run with 19 seconds before halftime. Tamayo’s PAT gave CH a 21-17 halftime lead.

Kilgore put up 10 points in the third quarter for a 27-21 lead as Rider, who looked to be stopped at the line of scrimmage, suddenly burst out and dashed 31-yards into the end zone. Baldazo’s PAT put Kilgore up 24-21 with 7:26 on the clock.

Chapel Hill drove to the Kilgore 28, but was stopped on fourth down. Kilgore marched to the CH 18. KHS’ Baldazo booted a 35-yard FG for a 27-21 advantage at 2:56 of the third.

CH got near the goal line again, but fumbled and Chris McGhee recovered for Kilgore at the 13.

The Blue Bulldogs took the lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Brisbon scored on a 5-yard run. Tamayo’s PAT put CH ahead 28-27.

Rider almost broke through for what would have been a 75-yard run, but Macfoy saved a TD with the tackle after a 20-yard gain.

Six plays later Dyer recovered a fumble for CH at the 50 when Watson and Huddleston combined for a sack that forced the fumble.

Two plays later, Chapel Hill was in the end zone. First Stewart burst through for a 45-yard run to the 5, followed by a Willis’ TD run. Tamayo’s PAT put CHHS up 35-27 with 6:41 in the fourth quarter.

After the Chapel Hill defense forced a punt, the CHHS Bulldogs moved to the Kilgore 32 but fumbled.

It took two plays for Kilgore to find the end zone as Rider dashed for 65 yards to the 3. On the next play, Matthew Hardy ran three yards for the TD. Then Van Zandt connected with Roney for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 35-35 with 4:17 on the clock in the fourth.

Kilgore’s Chris Ervin grabbed an interception to thwart the next CH drive, followed by a sack by Huddleston and Mosley to halt the Red Bulldogs.

Then it was time for overtime.
