Mineola’s Colton McMahon and Noah Turner signed with the next level this week.
McMahon, a wide receiver, will play at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma.
“It was really just the family atmosphere out there,” McMahon said. “When I went there with my whole family, we felt welcome,” McMahon said. “Even at the visit, I felt like I could commit right then and there. But I just wanted to take a couple of days, and I prayed about it. God made it evident to me and my family that was the place for me.”
McMahon had 42 catches for 624 yards and eight touchdowns this year for the Yellowjackets in his second season after coming over from Whitehouse.
“I’m excited,” McMahon said. “I’ve always wanted to play college football since I grew up watching (Patrick) Mahomes and those guys at Whitehouse. It always put a bug in my ear that I’ve got to play at the next level. Just being able to do that is a dream come true.”
Southern Nazarene competes in NCAA Division II and is in the Great American Conference with Harding, Ouachita Baptist, Southern Arkansas, Henderson State, Arkansas Tech, East Central, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Arkansas-Monticello, Southwestern Oklahoma State, Northwestern Oklahoma State and Oklahoma Baptist.
McMahon said he plans to major in business finance.
Turner, a kicker and punter, will play at Nelson University (formerly Southwestern Assemblies of God University) in Waxahachie.
“My grandparents went there and my parents went there,” Turner said. “My parents actually met there. I went there, and I just felt like it was a God thing. I got there and felt at ease there. All of the coaches were really nice. The facilities are not the nicest, but they are nice enough for me. That’s all I care about.”
Turner was 27 of 30 on extra points and 1 of 2 on field goals with a long of 27 yards this season. For his career, he was 96 of 104 on extra points and 7 of 9 on field goals with a long of 43 yards.
Nelson is an NAIA program in the Sooner Athletic Conference with Texas Wesleyan, Ottawa University Arizona, Texas College, Langston, Panhandle State, Wayland Baptist, Louisiana Christian and Arkansas Baptist.
Turner said he wants to major in sports business management.
