Lions hosting tourney to honor Eli Sanchez

Tyler High will honor a former young standout with the newly named Eli Sanchez Memorial Baseball Tournament this weekend in Tyler.

The tournament honors the life and legacy of former Lion Eli Sanchez.



A nine-team field is scheduled to participate with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Mike Carter Field. The Lions will be hosting Sulphur Springs, Nevada Community, Palestine Westwood, Hughes Springs, Troup, West Rusk, Harleton and Brownsboro participating.

Rawly “Eli” Sanchez, 19, was shot while in the backseat of a truck that was making a U-turn behind a Smith County business on the night of July 4.

Sanchez was a Tyler High School Class of 2022 graduate. In his time at Tyler High, he was a standout member of the baseball and football teams. In 2022, the Tyler Morning Telegraph selected him as the Best Preps Tyler Sportsmanship Award winner. He was also a starting quarterback for the Lions. He was a four-year varsity starter for the baseball team, while earning all-district, All-East Texas and All-Rose Country honors.

“(Eli) was a beloved student-athlete at Tyler High School,” Tyler Coach Seth Gibson said. “He will always be remembered as a high-spirited and loveable teammate.

Before his untimely death, Sanchez was working as a baseball coach at USA Prime East Texas and attending Tyler Junior College.

Thursday’s schedule includes: Palestine Westwood vs. Hughes Springs, 9 a.m.; Troup vs. Hughes Springs, 11 a.m.; Palestine Westwood vs. Troup, 1 p.m.; Brownsboro vs. Harleton, 3 p.m.; Nevada Community vs. Sulphur Springs, 5 p.m.; Nevada Community vs. Tyler, 7 p.m.

Friday’s schedule includes: Sulphur Springs vs. Troup, 9 a.m.; Nevada Community vs. Troup, 11 a.m.; Sulphur Springs vs. Harleton, 1 p.m.; Palestine Westwood vs. West Rusk, 3 p.m.;West Rusk vs. Harleton, 5 p.m.; Palestine Westwood vs. Tyler, 7 p.m.

Saturday’s schedule includes: Nevada Community vs. Hughes Springs, 9 a.m.; Sulphur Springs vs. Hughes Springs, 11 a.m.; West Rusk vs. Brownsboro, 1 p.m.; Brownsboro vs. Tyler, 3 p.m.; West Rusk vs. Tyler, 5 p.m.

ROSE CITY SOFTBALL CLASSIC

Tyler ISD will host the Rose City Softball Classic Thursday through Saturday at Tyler Legacy High School and Tyler High School.

There will be 15 teams in five pools. Pool A is Van, Troup and Mount Pleasant. Pool B is Malakoff, Scurry-Rosser and North Lamar. Pool C is Tyler Legacy, Killeen and Brownsboro. Pool D is Tyler, Mildred and Mabank. Pool E is Kerens, Jacksonville and Alba-Golden.

Thursday’s schedule at Tyler Legacy is Malakoff vs. Scurry-Rosser, 8 a.m.; Scurry-Rosser vs. North Lamar, 9:20 a.m.; and Malakoff vs. North Lamar, 10:40 a.m.; Tyler Legacy vs. Killeen, noon; Killeen vs. Brownsboro, 1:20 p.m.; Tyler Legacy vs. Brownsboro, 2:40 p.m.; Kerens vs. Jacksonville, 4 p.m.; Jacksonville vs. Alba-Golden, 5:20 p.m.; and Kerens vs. Alba-Golden, 6:40 p.m.

Thursday’s schedule at Tyler High is Van vs. Troup, 8 a.m.; Troup vs. Mount Pleasant, 9:20 a.m.; Van vs. Mount Pleasant, 10:40 a.m.; Tyler vs. Mildred, noon; Mildred vs. Mabank, 1:20 p.m.; and Tyler vs. Mabank, 2:40 p.m.

Bracket play and a consolation round robin will begin at 9 a.m. Friday.

BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

Lindale baseball is hosting the Robbie Surratt Memorial Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

Thursday’s schedule is Marshall vs. Gilmer, 10:30 a.m.; Kaufman vs. Gilmer, 1 p.m.; Kaufman vs. Paris, 3:30 p.m.; and Lindale vs. Paris, 6 p.m.

Friday’s schedule is Lindale vs. Kaufman, 10:30 a.m.; Paris vs. Gilmer, 1 p.m.; Paris vs. Marshall, 3:30 p.m.; and Lindale vs. Marshall, 6 p.m.
