UT Tyler scores win over Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. — UT Tyler closed out the 2024 portion of their basketball schedule with a 67-62 win over Western New Mexico on Thursday at Drag’s Court.

It was the second straight win for the Patriots as they improve to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in Lone Star Conference play. The Mustangs fall to 2-10 and 1-4.

Hudson Anderson, the 6-9 junior forward who transferred from Tyler Junior College, posted 14 points and 11 rebounds while Akok Machar and Mareng Gatkuoth each scored 11 points. Sam Phipps added 10 points.

For the game, the Patriots held the Mustangs to 37% shooting from the field and 26% from beyond the arc. They would post a 40-32 rebound advantage (16-6 in offensive boards), 20-8 advantage in bench points, and a staggering 44-20 advantage in points in the paint.



The Patriots return to play on Jan. 3, traveling to Oklahoma Christian. The Mustangs play host to Angelo State on Jan. 3.

UT Tyler’s next home game is on Jan. 9 when the Patriots play host to St. Edward’s.

LAS VEGAS — No. 3 Montana State-Billings held off a late rally by the No. 14 UT Tyler Patriots, 57-52, on Thursday in the Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena.

UT Tyler’s Ella Bradley scored a career high 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting and went a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point land, another career-best mark. Meagan Mendazona scored 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting and also added a 3-pointer.

UT Tyler (8-2) will look to regroup as they next take on No. 8 Embry-Riddle at 1:15 p.m. Friday in Vegas.
