Tyler Legacy splits doubleheader with Garland, Lufkin

Tyler Legacy hosted a hoops doubleheader on Tuesday night.

The Lady Raiders opened with a 67-14 drubbing of Garland, and the Red Raiders followed with a 63-52 setback against Class 5A No. 21 Lufkin.

GIRLS

Tyler Legacy 67, Garland 14 — Garland’s only made field goal of the first quarter was a 3-pointer from NBA range at the buzzer.

It was that kind of night for the Lady Owls as the Lady Raider defense made things difficult on them offensively. Garland was 1 of 6 from the field with eight turnovers in the opening quarter and finished 4 of 34 from the field (11.8 percent) with 33 turnovers in the contest.



Legacy dominated from the opening tip, quickly building an 18-2 lead before Kaylee Stephens’ long-range shot went through as time expired. The Lady Raiders responded with a 10-0 run to open the second quarter on the way to outscoring the Lady Owls 22-5, taking a 40-10 halftime lead.

Legacy outscored Garland 17-3 in the third quarter, holding the Lady owls scoreless for the final 6:25 of the quarter. In the final 14:25 of the game, Legacy outscored Garland 24-1.

New Mexico State commit Senoj Jones finished with 19 points, six rebounds and six steals for the Lady Raiders (4-0).

Legacy had 11 different players score. Zareya Ceasar had 10 points. Other scorers were Holland Pine 7; Nichole Baldwin 7; Shanaya Shaw 6; Madison Farmer 5; Jaida Sanders 4; DeCaila Bailey 3; Grace Mills 2; Na’Coria Jackson 2; and Zion Smith 2. Baldwin had eight rebounds, and Smith had five rebounds. Mills had four steals and four assists, and Bailey added four steals.

Stephens led Garland with 5 points.

The Lady Raiders will play in the Conroe Oak Ridge Tournament beginning Thursday. They’ll face Alief Hastings at noon and Klein Cain at 3 p.m. Thursday before taking on Tomball Memorial at 3 p.m. Friday.

BOYS

Lufkin 63, Tyler Legacy 52 — Lufkin outscored Legacy 34-23 in the second half to win its season opener on Tuesday night at Tyler Legacy Varsity Gymnasium.

The score was tied at 29 at halftime. The Red Raiders got a quick jumper from Jayden Jones to start the second half before Marcellus Parks made two free throws and then Austin Brown converted a three-point play to give the Panthers a lead they never relinquished.

With the score at 34-33 after a bucket by Legacy’s KJ Cyres, Lufkin went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to double figures. Lufkin led 47-39 after three quarters.

Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the fourth quarter until Parks, who scored on a drive in the final seconds of the third quarter, did it again to push the score to 49-39. Baskets by BJ Thomas (plus a free throw) and Javarius White followed to put the lead at 54-39. Lufkin’s lead remained at double digits the rest of the way, eventually getting to 17 with 1:04 remaining.

Brown, a 6-8 junior with offers from Iowa, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Wichita State, Rice, Sam Houston, SMU and Stephen F. Austin, finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Thomas had 15 points. Parks scored 11 points. JaKevion Sanders had 8 points and 10 rebounds. White scored 7 points, and Jakevon Moore added 2 points and four steals.

Ja’Corian Oes led Legacy (1-1) with 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Jones scored 9 points. Cyres and JP Rainer scored 7 points each. Cyres added five rebounds and three steals, and Rainer had six rebounds. Gage Nuckolls and Zyere Ceasar each scored 5 points, and Tyler Henry added 3 points.

Lufkin jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on Tuesday and led 14-9 before Cyres scored in the lane with 11 seconds on the clock and then Nuckolls made a three at the buzzer to cut the score to 15-14 after the first quarter. Lufkin quickly went up 20-14 with a three by Parks and a layup by Sanders. Legacy answered with a falling reverse layup by Jones and consecutive triples from Jones and Rainer to take a 22-20 lead.

Lufkin regained the lead before Legacy went up 29-25 at the free-throw line, and Lufkin eventually scored four points in the final minute of the half to knot the score at 29 at halftime.

Kilgore College’s basketball coaching staff, including head coach Robert Byrd, was in attendance on Tuesday.

Legacy will host Dallas W.T. White at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Lufkin will compete in the Dallas Mavs Fall Classic Thursday through Saturday.
