Barbara Ann Johnson

TYLER — Barbara Ann Johnson, 89, of Tyler, TX passed away on November 5, 2023. Barbara was born in Alexandria, Louisiana on July 18, 1934 to Herbert and Ora Shamburger. She spent her early years in Louisiana and the Texas Panhandle following her father’s work in the oil fields.

In 1952, while attending Texas Tech University, Barbara met and fell in love with a fellow band member, Joe Johnson, of the Tech marching band. Her silver saxophone was exactly what his wind-filled French horn was seeking. She and Joe married and spent their life together until his passing in 2018. They raised six children. Together they enjoyed traveling, dinner with friends and family, and watching their family grow exponentially. Barbara was an active member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception participating in the choir and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed many years playing bridge with several bridge groups in Tyler. She had a love for horseback trail riding and gardening. She will be forever loved and missed by her children and extended family.

Barbara is survived by her brother, Carl Shamburger of Austin, TX, daughters: Theresa Honeycutt (Rob Milke) of Houston, TX; Becky Braly (Kevin) of Tyler, TX; and Jeannie Conneen (Rich) of Tyler, TX; and sons: Mike Johnson (Patty) of Whitehouse, TX; Mark Johnson (George-Anna) of Dallas, TX; and Chris Johnson (Barbara) of Tyler, TX; as well as 19 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Ora Shamburger; her husband, Joe Johnson; granddaughters, Katie and Haley Johnson; and great-grandsons, Sean Honeycutt and Archer Irwin.

A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Tyler, TX on Monday, November 20th, at 10:00 AM. A rosary service will precede the mass beginning at 9:00 AM.
