Winnsboro Hoopfest: Winnsboro wins two games, will play Chapel Hill Friday morning

WINNSBORO — Host Winnsboro picked up two wins on Thursday in the Winnsboro Hoopfest.
Winnsboro opened the day with a 92-19 win over Paul Pewitt.

Faith Acker had 22 points. Jewelisa Duffer scored 14 points. Jayden Cox had 12 points. Kaitlyn McAdoo and Payton Green each had 10 points.
Later in the day, Winnsboro — ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches — grabbed a 60-34 win over Paris.
Acker and Faith Sechrist each had 14 points. Acker also had six rebounds and three blocks, and Sechrist hit four 3-pointers.
Sechrist opened the game with a triple and closed the first quarter with another three as Winnsboro led 15-7 after the first quarter. After Paris quickly stored to start the second quarter, Winnsboro went on a 14-2 run, capped by another Sechrist trey. Winnsboro led 31-16 at halftime.
With the score at 35-24 in the third quarter, Winnsboro closed the quarter on a 12-1 run with another late 3-pointer by Sechrist to make the score 47-25.
Asia Johnson led Paris with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Keshanti Grodon had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Cox and Green each had five steals for Winnsboro. Other scorers for Winnsboro were Cox 8; Shanda Davis 7; McAdoo 6; Green 5; Duffer 3; and Natalee Shirley 3.
The inside duo of Airianna Pickens and Allison Rickman led Canton to a 43-36 win over Whitehouse.
Pickens had 14 points, and Rickman had 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Class 4A No. 25 Eaglettes.
Canton scored the first bucket of the game with Pickens scoring inside. Whitehouse responded with a 9-0 run to lead 9-2 after the first quarter.
Canton opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run. Rickman had a 3-point play, hit a short jumper and then hit a 3-pointer. Lily Cervantes capped the run with a jumper. Whitehouse battled back to take a 17-14 lead before Pickens scored twice in the final minute to give Canton an 18-17 lead at halftime.
With Canton leading 22-21 after a layup by Amari Welch, Whitehouse went on an 8-0 run, but Canton went on a 7-0 run in the final 1:22 of the third quarter as Cervantes drained a long three at the buzzer to tie the score at 29.
With the game tied at 31, Pickens had a putback as part of an 8-1 Canton run. Whitehouse cut the score to 39-36 on a runner by Massila Kadi, but Welch answered with a steal and layup and two free throws to give Canton the win.
Cervantes had 7 points and six assists for Canton. Welch had 6 points, and Payton Bray had 4 points.
Freshman Tayla Morris led Whitehouse with 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Malazie Pardue scored 5 points. Kate Jones had 4 points. Indeya Williams, Mahayla McMahon and Savannah Onley had 3 points, and Kiana Thornton, Kadi and Audrey Brody all had 2 points. Williams, also a freshman, grabbed 15 rebounds.
Whitehouse took a 41-34 over New Boston later in the day.
Brownsboro won its opener 38-33 over Quitman and then took a 49-36 loss to Leander Glenn.
Against Glenn, Brownsboro had a 10-9 lead late in the first quarter before a late bucket by Crystal Jones to give the Grizzlies an 11-10 lead to end the first quarter.
With the score tied at 16 in the second quarter, Glenn ended the half on a 9-1 run to lead 35-17 at halftime. Glenn led 35-26 at the end of the third quarter.
Sophomore Soma Okolo had 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Glenn. The 6-1 wing hit three 3-pointers. Jones had 12 points for Glenn, and Mariah Hernandez added 9 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Khyra Garrett and Tiykeah McKenzie each had 12 points for Brownsboro. Khayla Garrett had 9 points. Michelle Lewis had 3 points and eight rebounds. Khyra Garrett and Hannah Stout each had five steals.
Lindale opened the day with a 33-31 loss to Mount Vernon as Mount Vernon’s Olivia Baird hit a game-winning 3-pointer with six seconds left.
Marley Keith led Lindale with 8 points, and Jillian Ortiz had 7 points.
Lindale closed the day with a 48-40 win over Texas High.
Chapel Hill picked up a 48-29 win over Pittsburg. The Lady Bulldogs led 16-13 at halftime, and the game was tied at 24 with 2:02 left in the third quarter before Chapel Hill ended the game on a 24-5 run during the final 10 minutes.
Kaiden Kelley led Chapel Hill with 10 points. Carneecia Johnson and Alexia Rogers each had 8 points for Chapel Hill.
Some other scores from Thursday were Paris 37, Longview 28; Leander Glenn 59, Sulphur Springs 33; Lone Oak 46, Texas High 32; Edgewood 53, Hallsville 25; and Malakoff 47, New Boston 43.
Winnsboro will play Chapel Hill at 9:20 a.m. Friday. The winner will face Leander Glenn at 4 p.m. Friday. Lindale will face Hallsville at 10:40 a.m. Whitehouse will play either Richardson Pearce or Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill at 9:20 a.m.
