The man accused of killing a couple and their unborn baby in a fiery crash on Feb. 12 in Smith County has been indicted on three counts of intoxicated manslaughter, a second-degree felony.
Gilberto Gomez, 27, of Saginaw, was unlicensed and under the influence of alcohol when he crashed head-on into the 2005 Toyota Camry driven by a Lindale couple.
Jaewoong Jang, 34, and his wife, Mikyung Ji, 29, were pronounced dead at the scene. Ji was pregnant and the unborn child died as well.
Gomez was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche on Texas Highway 110, about 8 miles west of Lindale.
A crash report obtained from the Texas Department of Transportation said Gomez crossed over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane and struck the Toyota Camry head-on.
The crash report said the Avalanche came to a rest in the southbound lane and the Toyota came to a rest facing south with the vehicles connected in the front.
Both vehicles were engulfed in flames.
Gomez survived the crash and was taken to a hospital.
Gomez’s passenger Jeremy Boys, 35, also was killed in the crash, according to the crash report.
Gomez has an extensive legal record in Smith County dating back to 2006. He was arrested several times for not having a driver’s license and for having a fictitious registration. Gomez also was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2010 for aggravated robbery.
Gomez remained in the Smith County Jail on bonds totaling $2.25 million.
He is scheduled for arraignment on June 8.
