While the teams of Texas, Baylor and Texas A&M were the Bermuda Triangle of college football last week, a couple of Elkhart High School graduates came through for Lone Star State squads.

Elkhart coach Sam Wells’ former players did quite well for themselves in the collegiate ranks.

Elkhart, a community in Anderson County with about 1,300 folks, produced two young men who garnered Player of the Week honors.

University of North Texas running back Jeffery Wilson was named the Conference USA Player of the Week, while Howard Payne freshman kicker Jacob Walters nabbed the American Southwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

Wilson was a key player as the Mean Green opened their season with a 59-14 win over the Lamar Cardinals at beautiful Apogee Stadium in Denton.

Wilson paced the Mean Green, averaging 14.7 yards per carry, which is the fourth-best single-game performance in school history for a player with at least 10 carries. He posted 176 yards on 12 carries and equaled a career-high in rushing touchdowns with three in less than two quarters of action. He scored from 2, 10 and 62 yards, pushing himself into seventh all-time in career rushing touchdowns (19) in school history. He also moved into ninth place in school history in rushing yards (2,166).

Wilson helped a ground attack that rushed for 436 yards as a team, just 28 yards shy of the school record in a single game. North Texas also set a school record for total offense in the win, posting 668 yards against Lamar.

Wilson and UNT travel to meet Metroplex rival SMU on Saturday in Dallas. Kickoff at Gerald J. Ford Stadium is set for 6 p.m.

A victory would give the North Texas program its 500th win.

Walters, the Elks former standout kicker, was 2 for 2 on field goals with a distance of 30 and 35 yards in Saturday’s 63-34 loss against Southwestern Assemblies of God in Waxahachie.

He also was 4-for-4 on extra point attempts and recorded seven kickoffs for 391 yards and two touchbacks.
