Texas College celebrated “Senior Day” the best way on Saturday, with a victory in the Steers’ final home game of the season.
Antwjuan Strahan threw two touchdown passes and Curtez Griffin caught two scoring strikes as Texas College defeated Lyon College, 21-14, on a damp and cool afternoon at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
The Central States Football League game was tied 14-14 in the fourth quarter before Griffin scored the tiebreaking TD on a 28-yard reception from quarterback Robert Woodard, who played the second half of the contest, held on Earl Campbell Field.
The Steers improve to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in CSFL play. Plus they have a two-game winning streak at home.
The Scots, a first-year program located in Batesville, Arkansas, fall to 0-10 and 0-4.
Cory Sherman, a junior from Marlin, led the ground attack with 137 yards on nine carries. He also had three catches for 22 yards.
Griffin, a junior from Shreveport, Louisiana, had six catches for 83 yards. He added a 9-yard TD pass from Strahan.
Strahan also tossed a 14-yard TD pass to Tyrone Bibby.
DeVontae Morris, a junior from Greenville, Mississippi, and Terrell Williams, a sophomore from Euless, each had interceptions for the Steers.
For the Scots, Michael Bowles was a workhorse, carrying the ball 23 times for 164 yards and a 49-yard TD dash. The junior from Earle, Arkansas, entered the game as the third-leading rusher in NAIA.
Josh Williams, a freshman from Tomball, scored on a 25-yard run for the Scots. The TD topped off a 98-yard drive in the third quarter.
Tristan Dickinson, a freshman linebacker from Panama City, Florida, recovered two fumbles for the Arkansas squad.
The Scots conclude their first season on Saturday, hosting Wayland Baptist at Pioneer Stadium. Batesville is located about 90 miles northeast of Little Rock, Arkansas.
