A Henderson man suspected of robbing a bank in Gladewater has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Just before 2 p.m. Friday, police responded to a bank robbery at Gladewater National Bank, 678 N Main St. in Gladewater, according to Police Chief Rob Vine.

Vine told the Longview News-Journal that witnesses told police a man entered the bank. The man then told an employee he wanted money, and the employee gave the man an undisclosed amount of cash.

Local and federal authorities conducted a search, believing the man, identified as Steve Bruce, was fleeing south on Highway 271.

White Oak police attempted to pull Bruce over on Highway 80 between Longview and Gladewater. When police approached the vehicle, Bruce shot himself. He was later pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
