Tyler’s first bank robbery of the year. Police said the robber wore a suit and drove away from the heist in a dark-colored Mercedes.
The robbery occurred about 7:52 a.m. Monday at the Capital One Bank on Copeland Road and Loop 323, Tyler police spokesman Don Martin said.
When asked if it was unusual for a bank robber to use a Mercedes as a getaway vehicle, Martin said, “I think the entire thing is unusual.”
Martin said two female bank employees had gone to the drive-thru to collect the overnight bank deposits and were walking back to the bank lobby when the 6-foot-tall, slender white man approached them.
“He was wearing a business suit and had a nylon stocking over his face and told the women to give him the money and not to look at him,” he said.
Martin said the women did as the man asked, and the robber made off with an undetermined amount of cash, which was a culmination of several bank bags from deposits made over the weekend.
Martin said witnesses nearby gave a description of the vehicle.
“We have spoken to some landscapers in the area who say they saw the man get into a black Mercedes with no license plates, but (it) did have a Park Place tag on it,” he said.
Park Place is a high-end car dealership in the Dallas area.
Martin said there have been no robberies by a man in a suit driving a Mercedes that he is aware of in the area. FBI did not comment in the case as of Monday afternoon.
The investigation continues with Tyler police and the FBI taking the lead in the case.
