The Weatherford Coyotes sizzled with an outside shooting barrage — hitting 18 3-pointers, including 12 in the first half — at the Sleep Inn & Suites Basketball Classic to outlast Tyler Junior College 99-94 on Saturday and offset a tremendous 33-point effort from TJC’s Dominique Shaw.
Nolan Cass drilled seven 3-pointers and Juozas Balcinunas added five treys for Weatherford.
The Coyotes scored the last seven points of the contest with a driving bucket by Juozas Balciunas and free throw, while Quentin Henderson and Fadil Yacoubou swished two charity tosses each.
The Apaches took the lead 92-91 on a Shaw drive to the bucket at 1:28 mark.
Besides Shaw’s 33 points, Tyler received 17 points from Tyler Miller and 15 points from Faith Pope.
Cass had a Weatherford team-high 23 points.
In the women’s game, the Apache Ladies lost their first game of the season, a 100-97 overtime decision to Collin College.
The Cougars’ Krystal Pickron had a personal 7-0 run with two minutes left in OT to extend their lead to 98-90 with just over a minute to play.
Tyler fought back when Shernise Robinson connected on a 3-pointer, along with buckets by Amber Driver and Malena Washington with 23 seconds left to pull the Apache Ladies within 98-97.
Driver then came up with a steal and Tyler had a chance to go in front, but Caitlyn Ramirez’s shot was short and Tyler had to foul.
Shomari Harris was fouled with 2.2 seconds left in overtime and calmly drilled the two charity tosses to seal the game.
Washington led the Apache Ladies in scoring with 25 points, including three straight 3-pointers to put Tyler ahead 56-55 with 11:26 left in regulation.
Robinson and Driver each contributed 14 points each for Tyler, who was playing without Friday night’s leading scorer Victoria Kimokai ,who was missing due to a death in her family.
The Cougars were led in scoring by Harris (23) and Pickron (22).
Tyler had two other in double figures with Ramirez hitting for 12 points and Bria Emanuel contributing 11.
SMOKE SIGNALS: In the final game of the night, Kilgore College scored an 89-56 win over Northwestern State JV.
