Bears fall to Van Alstyne

ROYSE CITY — Van Alstyne’s Jordan Barnes didn’t come close to the 522 yards he rushed for a week ago, but on Friday the senior back did plenty for the Panthers.

Barnes ran for 220 yards and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to rally Van Alstyne past winless Brownsboro 28-21 at Royse City ISD Stadium.

Barnes, who averaged 7.1 yards a tote, put the Panthers (4-2) ahead with 5:30 to play on his 200th yard.

The Bears’ ensuing drive stalled at the Panther 44 after KT Thompson couldn’t haul in Shelby Rogers’ heave on fourth-and-10 with 2:06 to play. Barnes then ran the clock out.

Rogers finished the night completing 11 of 28 passes for 164 yards, but had nine passes dropped.

Cody Strickland caught five balls for 109 yards for Brownsboro, including a 57-yard reception on the first play of the second half that tied the game at 14. On the play, Rogers pump faked and threw a toss-up to Strickland, who outjumped his defender, fought through a tackle and raced 27 yards for the score.

The Bears led 21-14 after Thompson, who led the Bears with 76 yards on the ground, ran in a direct snap from 12 yards out with 2:55 left in the third.

Then Barnes took over.

The Panthers tied the game on the next drive after Barnes carried seven times for 37 yards, including a 1-yard jaunt into the end zone.

After CJ Tyler picked off Rogers at the Panther 22, Barnes’ number was called five times for 55 yards. Barnes capped the drive with his 3-yard sprint for No. 200. Barnes had 139 yards in the second half.

Van Alstyne quarterback Drew Dennis finished an efficient 12 of 17 for 176 yards with no interceptions.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Van Alstyne got on the board with a quick strike. One play after a Brownsboro fumble, Dennis picked out Kyle Pickett for a 46-yard bomb midway through the second quarter.

The Bears too took advantage of a fumble for their first score, needing six plays to convert the Panthers mistake into six points.

Thompson’s 3-yard plunge pulled the Bears to within 7-6 following a failed two-point conversion.

On the next drive, Barnes ran for 44 yards on four carries to set up Dennis’ 4-yard run to paydirt, giving the Panthers a 14-6 cushion at halftime.

Both teams missed a field goal attempt in the first half.
