JASPER – Arkansas elk, living in the Buffalo River country of north Arkansas, continue to do well. Evidence is a highly successful 2015 limited permit hunt with hunters taking 47 elk.
Last year, a record 52 elk were taken according to Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Elk Program Coordinator Wes Wright. “This isn’t a record year, but it was still a good harvest. It is the second highest total recorded since the hunt began,” he said.
This year, 23 elk were taken on public land, Buffalo National River, Gene Rush Wildlife Management Area, Richland Valley Conservation Area and Bearcat Hollow Wildlife Management Area.
Twenty-four elk were taken by hunters on private land under the AGFC’s Elk Management Assistance Program. Landowners who request elk hunting are issued permits according to the acreage involved. Landowners can use these $35 permits or transfer them to others.
