Three winners of Longview’s NFL Punt, Pass & Kick sectional competition have earned the right to move on to the next level, which takes place at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium on Saturday.
Competing are Aubry Way-Mueller of Whitehouse and the Longview pair of Lauren Fisher and Maddie Melton.
Way-Mueller is a fourth grader at Cain Elementary School and her PE coach at Cain is Holly Drain.
The three also receive two free tickets to the Baltimore Ravens at Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday.
They were among the eight sectional winners at the annual event hosted by the Longview Parks and Recreation Dept. on Oct. 22 at the Judson Middle School football stadium.
The trio will be among a total of 40 participants vying for team titles in five separate boys’ and girls’ age divisions: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15. To qualify for the Cowboys’ Team Championship, these three finished among the top four scorers in their respective age divisions from a pool of 11 sectional winners.
Fisher, Melton and Way-Mueller qualified for Longview’s sectional round by winning their respective local crowns, Fisher and Melton in Longview and Way-Mueller in Whitehouse.
Way-Mueller claimed the 8-9 girls’ title with a total score of 151 feet, 5 inches; Fisher, who won the 8-9 girls’ sectional crown last year, captured the 10-11 girls’ crown with a 196-3 effort and Melton totaled 230-1 for the girls’ 14-15 title.
The top four scorers from all of the first-place finalists in each age division in both the boys’ and girls’ age groups (from each of the 32 NFL teams) advance to the National Finals which will be held at the 2017 Pro Bowl in Orlando, Florida.
Other Longview sectional winners included Latreyson Haralson of Tyler (Boys 6-7, 128-5); Tyler’s Angel Rodriguez (Boys 8-9, 175-7); Ezekial Gonzales of Ennis (Boys 10-11;242-5); Ennis’ Payton Chapman (Boys 12-13, 235-5) and Ty Freeman of Ore City (Boys 14-15, 261-6).
Prior to the sectional competition, Longview PARD hosted a local event that morning. Local winners, in addition to Fisher, Melton and Freeman, included Gilmer’s Zane Tyner (Boys 6-7, 104-4); Canyon Evans of Glen Rose (Boys 8-9, 170-2); Jacksonville’s Payton Dison (Boys 10-11, 147-4); and Isaiah Thomas of Longview (Boys 12-13, 191-9). Tyner and Thomas both finished third, respectively, in the sectionals.
Two Longview sectional winners in the past have won the Cowboys Championship en route to capturing the NFL PP&K national titles in the 14-15 boys category.
Hallsville’s Ronnie Gideon became Longview’s second national PP&K champion, taking the 14-15 crown in 2008 at Carolina’s Panther Stadium. William Morrison turned the trick in Honolulu in the 1990s.
