HUGHES SPRINGS – A week off did little to slow down the White Oak Roughnecks.
Heath Hood tossed five touchdown passes and rushed for another, Brandon Cook returned a punt for a score and the Roughnecks opened district play with a 56-7 win over the Hughes Springs Mustangs in District 8-3A Division I.
The win moves the Roughnecks to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in district, while Hughes Springs drops to 3-3 and 0-1.
Hood opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the contest when he bolted 31 yards for a touchdown to end a quick, 2-play, 65-yard drive.
The next three touchdowns came via the airways as Hood hit Connor Hearron for a 51-yard touchdown pass and then hooked up with Max Kutch on TD strikes of 15 and 36 yards as the Roughnecks built a 27-0 lead.
Cook, who already has two touchdown returns of interceptions this season, got into the scoring act when he brought a punt back 35 yards for a touchdown, and a 33-0 lead.
Hughes Springs’ lone score came on a 2-yard run by Alex Bruce to cap a 15-play, 68-yard drive, but the Roughnecks added a 13-yard touchdown pass from Hood to Kutch, a TD pass from Hood to Antonio Castiglione and a touchdown run by Dallas Reeves to make the final 56-7.
White Oak will host Sabine on Friday. Hughes Springs will visit Jefferson.
