Can’t get enough local basketball?
If not, the next three days should provide plenty to feast on.
That’s because the Wagstaff Holiday Classic gets under way today and runs until Saturday at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium. The longtime event, a Rose City tradition during the holidays, is mostly comprised of Tyler-area teams — meaning local bragging rights will be on the line.
For the first time, the Wagstaff features both a classic bracket and a tournament bracket after being a four-bracket tournament the past few years.
The Apache Classic is comprised of Whitehouse, Lindale, John Tyler, Terrell, North Forney and Bullard.
The Gold Bracket tournament, meanwhile, includes Chapel Hill, Henderson, All Saints, Grace Community, Brook Hill, Carthage, Bishop Gorman and King’s Academy.
The event concludes at 8 p.m. Saturday with the Gold Bracket championship game.
Two teams hoping to be in that game are Chapel Hill and Gorman, who tip the event off at 10:30 a.m. today. The Bulldogs and Crusaders will be followed on the opening day by Grace vs. Brook Hill at noon, Henderson vs. King’s Academy at 1:20 p.m., All Saints vs. Carthage at 3 p.m., Whitehouse vs. Terrell at 5 p.m., John Tyler vs. North Forney at 6:30 p.m. and Lindale vs. Bullard at 8 p.m.
The first four games on the second day feature second-round games (winner’s and loser’s brackets) in the Gold Bracket tournament, and then Terrell vs. Lindale at 5 p.m., North Forney vs. Whitehouse at 6:30 p.m. and Bullard vs. John Tyler at 8 p.m.
The schedule for the Apache Classic on the final day includes Lindale vs. North Forney at 3 p.m., John Tyler vs. Terrell at 5 p.m. and Whitehouse vs. Bullard at 6:30 p.m.
Session passes for the event are $6 for adults and $4 for students, plus tournament passes are available for $30. All games are scheduled for Wagstaff Gymnasium, which will be cleared before the 5 p.m. games each day.
The 2011 tournament champions were John Tyler (Gold Bracket), Chapel Hill (Apache Bracket), Tatum (Chief’s Bracket) and Brook Hill (Diamond Bracket).
