Vega goal lifts John Tyler boys past Mesquite; Lady Lions lose 4-2

Larry Vega scored 25 minutes into the second half and the John Tyler defense made it hold up in a 1-0 win over Mesquite on Tuesday at John Tyler High School Field.

The Lions (6-3, 1-1 0-1 District 11-6A) picked up their first district win in Class 6A in three tries.



The lone goal came from an assist by Frankie Sanchez, who crossed a free kick from the left to right side for Vega to put in.

Jose Mendoza made a couple saves in goal for the clean sheet.

“We started playing like a team and every single person took care of their position,” JT coach Paakal Mendoza said. “We played a lot better than previous games in district.”

Paakal Mendoza said defender Daniel Gonzalez and Vega were the players of the game for the Lions, who host Rockwall-Heath on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

 

Lady Lions show improvement in 4-2 loss

MESQUITE – After being outscored by 15 in their first two District 11-6A matches, the John Tyler Lady Lions lost 4-2 to Mesquite on Tuesday.

Betsy Barrera (unassisted) and Maritza Montoya (off a rebound) scored goals for the Lady Lions (0-8-1, 0-3 0-0 District 11-6A).

“The team is still working on working together and getting better,” JT coach Khanik Mendoza said. “It was a loss on the books but a win for us since there is major improvement.”

John Tyler, which lost 8-0 and 8-1 in its first two district games, plays at Rockwall-Heath on Friday at 7 p.m.
