BULLARD — A first year program usually comes out on the short end of the final score when it plays the defending national champion.
However, the Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies were able to earn a split in their doubleheader against Angelina College Saturday at Brook Hill’s Schab Field. TJC rocked Angelina 9-0 in the opener before the champs got a little revenge, dealing the Apache Ladies an 8-0 setback in the second game.
“Our girls were ready to play,” TJC coach Nicole Dickson said of the Game 1 win. “We had to work inside, but the girls worked hard in the cages and Halie (Vance) on the mount was as good as good can get.”
Angelina’s Samantha Moore cooled TJC off in the second game while the Lady Roadrunners erupted for seven extra-base hits, including two home runs.
“They threw their top pitcher at us in the last game, and we couldn't get the hits we needed,” Dickson said. “We just couldn't put anything together, and against good teams you can't do that.”
TJC (21-7) will host Trinity Valley CC on Wednesday in a DH, set for 1 p.m. at the Brook Hill school. Angelina will have a week off before plays Navarro at home next weekend.

The Apaches pounded out 13 hits, four of which were doubles in a comfortable opening win.
Meanwhile Halie Vance, a sophomore from Chapel Hill, was just as dominant in the circle. Vance went the distance for the shutout, scattering six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Lacie Stevens, a sophomore from Houston, did most of TJC’s damage at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and five RBIs. Halle Sabo (2 for 3, RBI, run) and Ashlin Roach (2 for 3, double, RBI) were also key at the plate.
TJC center fielder Jaclyn Molenaar was also 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Madison Langley (2-for-2, double, RBI), pounded out a two-RBI double. Stevens second double put TJC over the eight-run limit after five innings to secure the victory.
“We have got two really big conference home stands next week on Wednesday and Saturday, and we are gonna get back to work and see where we stand after that.”

Angelina banged out 11 hits, going through three Apache pitchers while claiming the 8-0 win in the finale of the day.

Angelina third-baseman Kassie James went a solid 4 for 4 with four RBIs and a deep homerun. Ashley Ingle was 2 for 3 and her two-run homer in the fourth inning got Angelina 6-0 lead and breathing room.
As far as the TJC offense, Marina Duran went 2 for 3 with a double and lead-off hitter Haley Mills went 2 for 4.
