TEXARKANA — After losing a heartbreaker on Friday, the Piney Woods TimberHogs rebounded on Saturday to earn an 11-6 win over the Texarkana Rhinos in Mid America League action.
Texarkana walked off with a 9-8 win over the TimberHogs on Friday, scoring four times in the bottom of the ninth.
Piney Woods sat at 30-28 on the season and in third place in the MAL standings, percentage points behind Joplin (33-29), heading into a Sunday game.
SATURDAY
Gabriel Flores continued his strong play at the plate for the TimberHogs, finishing the day 3 for 4 with a three-run home run and four RBI. Flores has now hit three-run home runs in three straight games.
Logan Jones also homered for the TimberHogs. Cermondrick Bland doubled twice and drove in a run, and Juan Murillo and Noah Paddie added doubles.
A.J. Smith, Bland and Jaxsen Derry all collected two hits, with Murillo driving in two runs and Paddie and Derry had an RBI apiece.
Rylan Evans doubled, singled three times and drove in a run in the loss for Texarkana. Carter Harris tripled. Soto Suzuki had two hits, and Aiden Otano drove in two runs.
Cade Medlin (3-2) went five innings on the mound for the TimberHogs, striking out seven, walking four and giving up four earned runs. Trent McGee fanned five with no walks or runs allowed in three innings, and Gage Goddard allowed one earned run on one hit in an inning of work.
Dalton Graham (0-3) took the loss for Texarkana.
FRIDAY
The Rhinos trailed 8-5 heading to the bottom of the ninth, but used an RBI walk by Alex DeLeon, a hit by pitch by Yuto Mimura, an RBI single from Carter Harris and a walk-off RBI walk by Soto Suzuki to rally for the 9-8 win.
Rylan Evans and Eli Selby drove in two runs apiece for Texarkana.
Flores homered and drove in three for Piney Woods, and Murillo added a double, single and RBI. Alton Gatson had three hits, Goddard two hits and two RBI and Corbin Montayne and Logan Jones an RBI apiece.
Kyle Poissoit (1-2) got the win in relief for Texarkana. Charles Chatman (0-1) took the loss for Piney Woods. Wilson Castillo Franco started on the hill for the TimberHogs, striking out 10 with no walks and three earned runs allowed in six innings.
NOTES: After a day off On Monday, the TimberHogs will visit Sherman for one game on Tuesday and two on Wednesday and visit Texarkana on Thursday, Aug. 8 before hosting Texarkana on Friday, Aug. 9 and Saturday, Aug. 10 to end the regular season … Following the end of the regular season, the No. 4 team will visit the No. 1 team and the No. 3 team will visit the No. 2 team in a one-game format to set up a one-game championship between the two winners.
