Tech snaps three-game losing streak

LUBBOCK — Darrion Williams had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Kerwin Walton scored 12 points on four 3-pointers before halftime and No. 23 Texas Tech never trailed on its way to a 66-59 win over UCF on Saturday. The Red Raiders snapped a three-game losing streak.



Williams had a jumper with 1:46 left that put the Red Raiders (17-6, 6-4 Big 12) up 60-57.

That came on the possession after UCF (13-9, 4-6) missed a chance to tie the game for the first time since 4-4 when C.J. Walker missed the first of his two free-throw attempts. The Red Raiders sealed the game with six free throws in the final 41 seconds, four by Joe Toussaint and two by Chance McMillian.

Toussaint also had a steal with 1:31 left and finished with 11 points. Warren Washington, after missing Tech’s previous game because of illness, had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Darius Johnson and Jaylin Sellers has 14 points each for the Knights. Walker had 13 points and eight rebounds.

While Texas Tech never trailed, the Red Raiders could never pull away from a UCF team that was coming off a win over then-No. 18 Oklahoma a week earlier and was trying to get its third win this season against a top-25 team.

Pop Isaacs was averaging 19.4 points in Big 12 games for Tech, but missed his first seven shots before a 3-pointer with just over 14 minutes left made it 41-36.

No. 4 Kansas 64, No. 13 Baylor 61

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Hunter Dickinson scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack as Kansas extended its home-winning streak to 18 games with a victory over Baylor.

Baylor got the ball with 14.2 seconds left and a chance to tie it, but Jayden Nunn’s 3-point try from the corner was short. After Nicolas Timberlake missed the front end of a one-and-one, Ja’Kobe Walter’s 3-point attempt caromed off the rim.

Texas 94, West Virginia 58

AUSTIN — Dylan Disu scored 19 of his 27 points in the first half and Max Abmas score 19 points and moved past Oscar Robertson on the all-time scoring list and Texas routed West Virginia 94-58 on Saturday.

Abmas, a graduate transfer who played four years at Oral Roberts, passed Robertson with his third 3-pointer of the first half into 12th all-time scoring in NCAA history. Abmas — with 2,987 career points — is 13-points short of the 3,000-point career mark, only accomplished by 11 other players. Next on the list to pass is Bradley’s Hersey Hawkins with 3,008 points.

The 6-foot Abmas made 5 of 12 from beyond the arc, distributed nine assists without a turnover and grabbed six rebounds. Meanwhile, Disu recorded a career-high with seven 3s (in 10 attempts), shot 10 for 16 and went 7-for-7 shooting in the first half.

No. 14 Iowa St. 71, TCU 59

AMES, Iowa — Tre King scored 15 points and Keshon Gilbert had 13 points and seven assists, helping Iowa State beat TCU.

Curtis Jones also scored 13 points for Iowa State (18-5, 7-3 Big 12), which improved to 14-0 at home this season. The Cyclones shot 50% (24 for 48) from the field and went 15 for 18 at the free-throw line.

Emanuel Miller led TCU (16-7, 5-5) with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Jakobe Coles went 3 for 3 from 3-point range and finished with 14 points.

No. 5 Houston 67, Cincinnati 62

CINCINNATI — J’Wan Roberts scored 20 points, including a game-sealing dunk with six seconds left, as Houston outlasted Cincinnati.

Jamal Shead added 16 points on 6-of-25 shooting for the Cougars (21-3, 8-3 Big 12), who won their 10th straight game against their longtime foe.

Dan Skillings Jr. led the way with 13 points for the Bearcats (15-8, 4-6), who haven’t defeated Houston since February 2020.

UT Arlington 71, SFA 63, OT

ARLINGTON — Makaih Williams had 17 points in UT Arlington’s 71-63 overtime win against SFA on Saturday night.

Williams was 4 of 12 shooting, including 3 for 4 from 3-point range, and went 6 for 6 from the line for the Mavericks (12-12, 7-6 Western Athletic Conference). Aaron Cash scored 12 points while finishing 5 of 6 from the floor, and added seven rebounds. DaJuan Gordon scored 12.

Kyle Hayman led the way for the ‘Jacks (14-10, 7-6) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Latrell Jossell added 14 points and three steals for SFA. In addition, Jalil Beaubrun finished with 11 points and three blocks.

The Mavericks next play Thursday against Tarleton State at home. SFA hosts Abilene Christian on Saturday.

A&M-Commerce 89, New Orleans 83

COMMERCE — Kalen Williams’ 26 points helped Texas A&M-Commerce defeat New Orleans 89-83 on Saturday.

Williams was 9 of 15 shooting, including 2 for 3 from 3-point range, and went 6 for 10 from the line for the Lions (9-15, 3-8 Southland Conference). Tommie Lewis added 21 points while going 6 of 10 from the floor, including 3 for 4 from 3-point range, and 6 for 6 from the line, and they also had five rebounds and six assists. Vincent Reeves shot 6 for 7, including 5 for 5 from beyond the arc to finish with 17 points.

South Florida 69, Rice 64

HOUSTON — Chris Youngblood had 24 points and South Florida beat Rice 69-65 on Saturday for its ninth straight victory.

Youngblood was 8-for-14 shooting (6 for 7 from 3-point range) for the Bulls (17-5, 10-1 American Athletic Conference). Kasean Pryor scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Selton Miguel had 12 points.

Travis Evee finished with 20 points for the Owls (9-15, 3-8). Max Fiedler totaled 13 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Keanu Dawes added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Gonzaga 89, No. 17 Kentucky 85

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Anton Watson scored 17 points, including a go-ahead three-point play with 3:49 remaining before adding two key layups in the final 91 seconds, Ben Gregg and Nolan Hickman sank key late free throws and Gonzaga survived a second-half rally to beat Kentucky.

The Wildcats (16-7) have now lost three straight at Rupp Arena for the first time.

Gonzaga (18-6) outperformed Kentucky in most every phase to lead 42-32 at halftime.

Graham Ike had 23 points before fouling out with 43 seconds left, Hickman had 17 points and Braden Huff 12 points for Gonzaga.

No. 3 North Carolina 75, Miami 72

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — RJ Davis scored 25 points and North Carolina held off Miami.

Armando Bacot had 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Tar Heels (19-5, 11-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) in their first game since an 80-76 home loss to Clemson on Tuesday. Elliot Cadeau scored 19 points, and Harrison Ingram finished with 13.

Miami (15-9, 6-7) closed to 73-71 on Wooga Poplar’s layup with 1:10 left. Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan each made a foul shot to increase North Carolina’s lead to 75-71.

Oklahoma 66, Oklahoma St. 62

NORMAN, Okla. — Jalon Moore scored 15 points with eight rebounds and four blocks and Javian McCollum made 4 of 4 from the free-throw line in the closing seconds to help Oklahoma slip past rival Oklahoma State 66-62 Saturday night.

Le’Tre Darthard scored nine points off the bench and Milos Uzan added eight points and six assists for Oklahoma (18-6, 6-5 Big 12).

Javon Small hit a jumper and made a layup in a 6-0 spurt that gave Oklahoma State a 56-52 lead with 5 minutes to go. Moore answered with a 3-pointer and Darthard added another before Moore made two free throws with 2:25 remaining that made it 61-56.

No. 21 BYU 72, Kansas St. 66

PROVO, Utah — Fousseyni Traore scored 14 points and had eight rebounds to lead No. 21 BYU to a 72-66 victory over Kansas State on Saturday night.

Spencer Johnson and Jaxson Robinson added 12 points apiece to help the Cougars (17-6, 5-5 Big 12) while Noah Waterman chipped in 11 points and Trevin Knell added 10.

Arthur Kaluma led the Wildcats (15-9, 5-6) with 18 points and eight rebounds and Cam Carter added 14 points.
