Teams from the Fort Worth area and Louisiana are new additions to a host of East Texas squads for the 63rd annual Wagstaff Holiday Classic.
Tournament director Mike Marquis, who is also the Tyler Junior College basketball coach, wanted to influx some talented teams from outside the area to compete with the Piney Woods talent.
The tournament begins on Dec. 28 and continues through Dec. 30.
Fort Worth Brewer and Crowley are from Cowtown, while Evangel Christian is from Shreveport, Louisiana.
There are some 20 teams with games scheduled for Wagstaff Gymnasium and Gentry Gymnasium in the Ornelas Health & Physical Education Center.
Along with the teams from outside the area, 17 East Texas staples are participating.
Area squads include: All Saints Episcopal, Arp, Athens, Bishop T.K. Gorman, Bullard Brook Hill, Brownsboro, Chapel Hill, Grace Community, Jacksonville, Kilgore, Lindale, Marshall, New Summerfield, Palestine, Robert E. Lee, Van and Whitehouse.
There is a tournament pass for $30. Other ticket prices for the sessions are $6 (adults) and $4 (students). No other passes will be honored (i.e. Referee Association, Coach’s, UIL, District, NCAA, etc.).
Also, due to the increase in participating teams, bracket play during Day 2 and Day 3 will only include winning teams. Losing teams will move on to a Classic format with opponents and game times to be determined.
Classic sponsors include: Apache Athletics, Aramark, Athletic Supply, Azalea Orthopedics, CiCi’s Pizza, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Tyler, Don”s TV & Applicances, Dr. D.M. Edwards, Gollob, Morgan, Peddy, & Co., P.C, Texas Spine & Joint Hospital and Urgent Care and Tyler Junior College Foundation.
