GARLAND — Robert E. Lee put its foot on the gas in the second quarter and Garland Lakeview Centennial never recovered.
With the game tied at 7 following a Lakeview Centennial touchdown, the Red Raiders scored on their next five possessions to race away to an eventual 41-21 win Friday at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
The victory gave Lee a 3-3 record overall and made REL 2-1 in District 11-6A. Lakeview Centennial fell to 2-4 and 0-3.
“Our coaches told us that we are better when we go fast,” said Lee quarterback Zach Hall, who finished 15 of 24 for 173 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for two scores.
“Instead of just going fast in the second half (like we have in the previous games), we went fast the whole game tonight.”
Lakeview Centennial did not have an answer for REL’s pace of play with Lee gaining big chunks of yardage on runs by Tavon Wesley (11-109) and Devonte Craver (11-84, two TDs) or passes from Hall to Mason Parker (5-61), Jordan Devers (3-37), Isjuwan Barker (3-37) and Trevor Carr (4-23).
Tyrec Grayson only caught one pass, but turned it into a 23-yard catch-and-run touchdown.
“Our receivers were out there making plays and we are well-conditioned (and it showed),” Hall said. “I was a little high on some throws early, but after I got my rhythm, we started (rolling).”
All told, Lee finished with 509 yards of offense.
But that is only half of the story.
The other side of the coin was Lee’s defense, which sacked Lakeview Centennial quarterback T.J. Edwards seven times and limited the Patriots to just a touchdown until the second team gave up two scores in the fourth quarter.
After Edwards scored on a 4-yard sneak to tie Lee 7-7, the REL stop unit allowed just five first downs in the rest of the half and third quarter while also stopping Lakeview Centennial on fourth down.
“It’s great to come out here and shut down a team like that after the loss we took (two weeks ago),” Lee linebacker Teddy Matlock said. “After they scored we came together as a defense and said we weren’t giving them any more.”
The Red Raiders defense forced a three-and-out to begin the game and Lee’s offense responded in kind, driving 86 yards in 17 plays. Lee had a touchdown called back by holding, but that just gave Hall and chance to provide the play of the game. On third-and-15 from the Patriots 19, Hall scrambled near the sideline and looked to be hemmed in, but evaded a tackle and bought enough time to fire an 18-yard strike to Parker.
That gave Lee first-and-goal at the 1 and Trevor Carr took it from there, motioning in from inside receiver and scoring on a 1-yard sneak.
Lakeview Centennial tied the game on Edward’s 4-yard touchdown.
Lee then began at its own 45 and started picking up the pace, with Craver busting loose for runs of 10 and 15 yards before turning it over to Wesley to move Lee into the red zone. Craver capped the drive with a 2-yard scoring run to make it 13-7 with 8:33 left in the half.
Lee’s defense stymied Lakeview Centennial and the Red Raiders went back to work, again racing down the field with quick runs and passes, with Hall finishing with a 14-yard TD run, putting a spin move on a Lakeview Centennial tackler to give him open space to the end zone.
Another Lee stop on D and another quick Red Raiders touchdown followed. This time it was Hall connecting with Grayon, who did the rest to make it 27-7 at halftime.
The Red Raiders tacked on two more touchdowns in the second half and now turn their attention to Garland with a 7:30 kickoff slated for Friday, Oct. 17, at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
