West Rusk running back George Anthony has been named the Week 2 American State Bank Player of the Week, ASB’s Tim Haugh said in a news release on Tuesday.
Anthony not only had a great game against Big Sandy (55-19 win), but in the process broke the single-game school rushing record with 333 yards on 20 carries. He also broke the school record for touchdowns in a game with five rushing touchdowns. The previous school record for rushing in a game was 264 yards, and the previous record for TDs in a game was four.
“Man, what a great way to honor George for his tremendous effort this past Friday night,” West Rusk head coach John Frazier said. “He is such a good kid. And this was truly a team effort.
“When the offensive line found out at halftime that George had a chance to break the school records, it became a big deal to them to make sure they did everything they could do in order to make it happen. And after the game, George made it a point to praise all of his teammates for helping him achieve the record. He is just a special young man, who works hard and is very humble.”
Haugh added, “It is truly my privilege to be able to present this award to someone like him. Plus, the numbers don’t lie; he had a fantastic game and is very deserving to be named the American State Bank Player of the Week.”
Each weekly winner (Zero Week through Week 10) of the American State Bank Player of the Week award automatically receives an invitation to the end of the year banquet to recognize the weekly winners. One of those 11 weekly winners will be chosen as the American State Bank Player of the Year, where they will receive a $10,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice.
