On Saturday, the 74th Annual East Texas Golden Gloves culminated with the Open Division.

Up for grabs: trips to the state tournament, set for Feb. 26-March 1 in Fort Worth.

The action capped three nights of amateur boxing at UT Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center. The event’s final night featured the biggest crowd and the Open title bouts, the fighters ranging from 123 to 201 pounds.

When the Open fighters took center stage, Tiger Boxing’s Xavier Rodriguez and Bravo’s Juan Bravo went back and forth in the 123-pound weight class. And when the final bell sounded on the third-and-final three-minute round, Rodriguez got the judges’ decision to earn a belt and advance to state.

The second Open bout pitted D-Rocks’ Justin Krantz against Joey’s Rex Jackson, a 132-pound match from which Krantz prevailed by decision.

Jose Martinez, unattached, earned a split decision over Troup’s Jose Romero in 141s, Ambriz’s Jose Hernandez beat Troup’s Winford Page in 152s and Troup’s Luther McAfee outlasted D-Rocks’ Henry Wells in 201s.

The other Open bouts included unattached Jose Martinez against Troup’s Jose Romero in 141s, Troup’s Winford Page against Ambriz’s Jose Hernandez in 152s and Troup’s Luther McAfee against D-Rocks’ Henry Wells in 201s.

Troup’s Alex Martinez (108s) and Jeremy Butler (178s) advanced with walkovers, as did unattached Dannion Pollard (114s).

Troup won the team championship. D-Rocks placed second and Bravo finished third.

Saturday’s action also featured fights involved newcomers ranging in weight from 65 pounds to more than 200 pounds. There was one female match as 2 Champions’ Desiree Garcia, celebrating her birthday, stopped Troup’s Alyssa Elton in the Novice 115-pound class.

The winners included House of Champions’ Christian Terrazas (BN 65), Alberto Favardo (JN 101), Gerardo Guzman (JN 95) and Rashad Price (AC 165); D-Rocks’ Robbie Geisleman (MN 152), Ricardo Salgado (MN 178) and Drew Dawson (MN 201); Troup’s Peyton Lyon (BN 70), Jordan Ladue (MAC 201) and Coy Elton (BN 90); and Carthage’s Jose Laros (IN 141) and Victor Velasquez (MN 165).
