Martins Mill has had many famous basketball players over the years including Tyler Junior College All-American O’Neal Weaver and former University of Texas player and coach Leon Black.
Now, some Mustangs want to add their names to that famous list when they seek a state championship this weekend in San Antonio.
This herd of Mustangs is hoping to corral their first state championship since 1949. They would like to duplicate the feat of the Lady Mustangs last weekend in San Antonio with a state title.
Martins Mill (33-4) takes on Canadian (19-1) in the UIL Class 2A state boys basketball tournament semifinal at 10 a.m. Friday in the Alamodome.
The other semifinal has Dallardsville Big Sandy (37-3) meeting Schulenburg (29-7) at 8:30 a.m.
The semifinal winners advance to the state championship game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The championship game will be broadcast on TV by Fox Sports Southwest.
This is the fourth state tournament appearance for the Mustangs. The first came in 1949 when they won it all and the others were in 2006 and 2007.
The 1949 team won the Class B state championship with victories over Marfa (38-24), Waelder (40-38) and finally Livingston (now Dallardsville) Big Sandy (39-33) in the final.
The Mustangs came close in 2006 (lost in the Class 1A Division II semifinals to Gruver in triple overtime 59-55) and in 2007 (fell in the 1A Division II final to Thorndale 39-37).
Now, the Martins Mill community would like another title.
