MM’s July Latimer tied for 2nd midway through 2A golf tourney

July Latimer, of Martins Mill, is tied for second in the medalist race after Wednesday’s first round of the UIL Class 2A Boys Golf Tournament at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.

Latimer carded a 2-over 73 on the 6,412-yard layout. He is tied with four other golfers, six strokes behind leader Logan Young of Normangee, who carded a 4-under 67.



Others tied with Latimer are Brodey Warner and Jacob Root, both of Brookeland, Bryson Nail of Mart and Sean Weiser of Haskell.

The second and final round of the tournament is Thursday.

Brookeland leads the team race at 313, followed by Normangee (316) and Olney (318). Grapeland is fourth at 328 while Martins Mill is eighth at 343. Cross Roads is 12th at 386.

Golfers for Grapeland include Brayden Cheatham (75), Riley Chipman (83), Case Boyd (84), Blake Watson (86) and Zach Lewis (89).

Joining Latimer on the Mustangs’ team are J. Adam Burcham (82), Trey Saxon (86), Spencer Hines (102) and Hagen Bennett (106).

Cross Roads golfers include Randy Flowers (86), Tyler Johnson (93), Taylor McKenzie (103), Jace Watson (104) and Carson Paroline (113).

Overton’s Landon Carpenter and Alto’s Casey Cannon, who are competing as medalists, carded 83 and 89, respectively.

In the girls 2A tournament, Memphis leads the team race at 336, followed by Wellington (349) and Thrall (373). Cross Roads is 11th at 475 and Grapeland is 12th at 486.

Memphis’ Renee Molloy and Miles’ Shelby Cmerek lead the medalist race after carding 77s.

Emily Walker paced Grapeland with an 89. Other Grapeland linksters are Kadie Richburg (131), Madelyn Conner (132), Callie Richburg (134) and Sayler LeBlanc (147).

Cross Roads golfers include Alex Dickson (108), Bailey Bass (126), Morgan Wilson (130), Jennifer Bradford (138) and Abby Newman (141).

The Class 1A tournament is being played at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

In the girls event, Wink leads with a 405, followed by Utopia (419) and Leakey (431).

Shaley Goad, of Briscoe Fort Elliott, leads the individual race with a 78. Marki Kinkade of Blanket is second at 82. Claire Jones of Saltillo had a 119.

In the boys tournament, Throckmorton No. 1 is on top at 337, followed by Happy (342) and Bronte (358).

Mitchell Downing of Happy leads the medalist race with a 73 while Lanham Brown of Throckmorton and Mathew Orask of Moulton are tied for second at 77.

James Hutson of Kennard carded a 96.

The second and final round is Thursday.
