HS Soccer Roundup, Feb. 19: Lee girls win shootout

Published 11:12 pm Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Robert E. Lee (0-4-1, 2 pts) grabbed its first points in District 12-5A Tuesday thanks to a come-from behind effort against North Mesquite.

The Lady Raiders trailed 3-2 in the second half of overtime with time running out when Julia Harrison completed her hat trick with a goal off a pass from Kendall Bullock.

This meant both teams had earned at least a point and the overall winner would be decided on a penalty shootout. Lee keeper Alyson Johnson saved North Mesquite’s last attempt, enabling Brooke Johnston to score the game winner. North Mesquite also got a point to make its record 2-1-2 in district play.

“It was just nuts,” said Lee coach Chris Woodard. “Just to see everyone smiling afterward was great. The girls battled hard and (got the result).”

Lee led 2-0 early on off two goals by Harrison off assists from Johnston and Ariel Howell. North Mesquite rallied back to tie and then take the lead in the first half of overtime.
