LONGVIEW — Robert E. Lee’s boys soccer team snapped out of a two-game skid in a big way, defeating Pleasant Grove 7-0 on Saturday in its final game of the Longview Classic.

The Red Raiders played on the natural surface of Longview Soccer Complex and the recent rain caused difficulties for both teams before REL figured things out in the second half.

“We didn’t score until two minutes before the half; the guys had a hard time adjusting to the conditions,” Lee coach Marty Germany said. “It was hard to play good, clean soccer because the field was just so slow. Every time somebody made a cut, it left a three-inch divot.”

Lee senior Lumi Kaba scored his second hat trick of the season with goals also coming from Giovanni Sosa, Keegan McCombie, Tito Arroyo and Javier Ruiz. Assists were by Uriel Chavez (2), Andres Ledesma, Kaba, Travis Bell, Ruiz and Arroyo.

Goalkeepers for Lee were Henry Plancarte, Allan Gilliam and Omar Valtierra.

JT’s (4-7) goal was scored by Jolenne Calleja.

“We played against Longview last week and lost 2-0, so I was hoping it would be a bit better,” JT coach William Aranguren said. “At least we scored a goal, which I was proud of that but our defense couldn’t beat them back.”

Curtis and Libby George were named to the all-tournament team as REL (5-2) went 3-0 this weekend.

“We would’ve liked to score some more goals; we knocked the ball around, but we need to get more dangerous (in the final third),” Lee coach Chris Woodard said. “But we got three wins this weekend and that was good.”

Woodard said extra credit goes to the defensive back three of George, Ariel Howells and Erika Gooding while Madi McCann and Alyson Johnston combined on the clean sheet.

The Lady Raiders will next face Lufkin at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chick-Fil-A Lady Lobos Classic in Longview.
