HS Baseball/Softball Roundup, Feb. 19: Red Raiders win opener

Robert E. Lee opened the season on the right note and David Howard is 1-0 as a varsity head coach thanks to an 8-1 win Tuesday over Marshall at Mike Carter Field.

Lee pitcher Daniel Bogue got the win, going six innings and allowing one unearned run with 11 strikeouts.



Trace Reed was 3 for 4 with three runs scored. Lee led 2-1 after the first before Blake Korthauer delivered a two-out, two-run single to help put Lee in control.

“It’s always nice to win the first one,” Howard said. “I am really proud of the effort and the energy the kids had tonight. It was as pretty good start to the season.”

Brook Hill edges rival All Saints, 9-4

Jonah Gonzales hit a three-run home run to help Bullard Brook Hill top rival All Saints 9-4 on Tuesday.

Kendall Kerns went 2 for 4 with a solo shot for the two-time defending state champion Guard (2-0).

Garrett Buatte was 2 for 3 with three RBIs for All Saints (4-2).

MINEOLA — Blake Whitney and Tino Elias combined on a one-hitter to lead Mineola past Bishop Gorman, 20-0, on Tuesday in a baseball opener.

Rains’ Coffman, Gowin combine for no-hitter

ALBA — Colton Coffman and Kirby Gowin combined on a no-hitter, leading the Rains Wildcats to a 10-0 win over Alba-Golden on Monday in a baseball game.

Coffman (1-0) struck out eight, while Gowin had six strikeouts.

Coffman also basted a home run as one of his two hits. He had three RBIs. Chance Newsom and Matt Edwards each had doubles. Dillion Gossett and Tyler Lennon each had hits.

 

Nelson leads CH by Brownsboro

BROWNSBORO — Braden Nelson allowed just one run on six hits to carry the Chapel Hill Bulldogs past the Brownsboro Bears 4-1 Monday in the baseball opener for both teams.

Nelson struck out three.

The Bears outhit the Bulldogs, 6-3, with Chris Davis going 3 for 3.

Shelby Rogers came in for the Bears and tossed four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Raul Gutierrez started the game for Brownsboro, going three innings and striking out four. Chapel Hill took the lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Andrew Black.

The Bears’ run came on an RBI double by Rogers.

Brownsboro won the JV game, 12-3, as Dylan Hall got the win on the mound.

Troup tops Alto, 13-2

TROUP —Mason Mallard belted two doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Troup Tigers to a 13-2 win over Alto on Monday in baseball game.

Luke Smith, Lou Roberson and Brant Palmer added doubles for the Tigers.

Palmer had four RBIs and Smith added two. Ty Howell had an RBI as well.

Mallard, Roberson and Palmer had two hits each, while Seth Gibson, Smith and Howell had one apiece.

Smith got the win on the mound.

 

Softball

Van’s Gandy tosses one-hitter

VAN — Nicole Gandy tossed a one-hitter while striking out four to lead Van to a 10-0 win over Grand Saline on Tuesday in a softball game.

Chelsey Trejo and Sierra Nicholls each had two hits for Van.

GILMER — Makayla Sikes tossed a one-hitter while striking out seven in leading Gilmer to a 3-1 softball win over Tatum on Tuesday.

In the fourth, Lidia Sustaire doubled and scored on Bree Rawls’ single.
