Troup wins 18-2A tennis title; Edgewood sweeps 17-2A

TROUP — The Troup Tigers won the District 18-2A Tennis Tournament on Tuesday at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center.
The mixed doubles team of Quintin Green and Hunter Jordan won the district championship, while Jacob Beaty was runner-up in boys singles. All three are headed to the regional tournament, which is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at TJC.
Taking the bronze were Nico Fernandez (boys singles) and Sean Powell-Alex Hall (boys doubles). Austin Chambers and Charlie Rowden were fourth in boys doubles.
The Troup boys and girls also won the JV divisions.
The JV Tigers won district championships in boys singles (Travis Walston), girls singles (Madi Burke) and mixed doubles (Grace Richardson-Kyle Johnson).
Placing second were Samantha Marshall-Marissa Martin (girls doubles) and Ethan Molnari (boys singles),
Placing third was Brianna Wilkie (girls singles).
Edgewood sweeps 17-2A
MINEOLA — The Edgewood Bulldogs captured the overall District 17-2A Tennis Tournament, which concluded Monday at the Mineola Civic Center.
Edgewood had 46 points to runner-up Grand Saline’s 44.
Edgewood also won the girls title with 27 points, followed by Alba-Golden (20). Grand Saline won the boys title with 29 points, followed by Edgewood (19).
The top two places qualified for the Class 2A Region III Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday at Tyler Junior College’s JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center.
In girls singles, Edgewood’s Kendra McGahee won the championship with Payton Weidman of Grand Saline runner-up.
Shelby Allred and Layne Allred of Grand Saline won the girls doubles crown with Edgewood’s Bailey Cates and Kayl Douglas second.
Alba-Golden’s Colton McGahee captured the boys singles title with David Barnes of Grand Saline runner-up
The Grand Saline duo of Trent Phelps and Cason McCown won the boys doubles championship with teammates Austin Boyles and Lathan Akins finishing runner-up.
In mixed doubles, Mary Perez and Daniel Sharff won the championship over teammates Emily Rutter and Jacob Sharff.
