Points were hard to come by Friday night at the Robert E. Lee Varsity Gymnasium.

Fortunately for Robert E. Lee, senior post Garrett Thibodeaux scored enough down the stretch to lead the Red Raiders past Garland 36-27.

The victory moved the Red Raiders (15-7, 5-4) into a third- place tie in District 11-6A basketball with Garland (11-14, 5-4).

Thibodeaux finished with a double-double, providing 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds and two big fourth-period assists.

“It was hard because they played a real tight zone and every time I got (the ball) in the post I had to pop it back out,” Thibodeaux said. “We just had to be patient (on offense). Towards the end of the game they started getting over aggressive and that opened (passes down low) to Zach (Dunn) and he was able to get easy layups.”

The pass Dunn converted to make it 25-21. The second time they hooked up in the paint, Dunn’s basket made it 29-23 with 2:30 remaining.

The rest of the game featured Thibodeaux at the free-throw line to ice the victory.

Lee led 15-14 at halftime as both teams combined to miss 35 of their 46 shot attempts.

The Red Raiders were limited coming into the game without starting point guard Zach Hall and guards Rico Major and Jordan Devers for various reasons, REL coach Jeff Coleman said. All three have seen significant playing time.

That meant others would have to step into those roles.

Coleman said John Davis, JoGene Aguilar and Dexter Green deserve credit for the win.

“Anytime you have guys on the floor who are willing to be coached, you have a chance to be successful,” Coleman said. “These guys were willing to be coached and we did the things we needed to do. We limited our transition and controlled the tempo from start to finish.

“Those guys that came off the bench and haven’t been playing a lot of minutes this year, they came in and did a wonderful job on both ends of the floor.”
