Quitman’s Thompson named player of the week

Quitman’s Andre Thompson helped his team rebound from an opening-week loss with a memorable performance last Friday night.



The Bulldogs quarterback racked up 379 yards of total offense in a 44-34 victory on the road against T.K. Gorman. He rushed for 166 yards and four touchdowns, plus passed for 215 yards and another two scores.

He reached the end zone three times spanning the second and third quarters, during which Quitman scored 36 points to move in front for good. His rushing scores were from 38, 3, 58 and 14 yards out, while his passing scores were from 70 and 58 yards out to Macawley Morrow.

Quitman returns to action Friday against Como-Pickton.

Jacob Cheatham, Elkhart: In the Elks’ 52-22 win against Normangee, Cheatham was one of the team’s big-play guy. He caught a 56-yard touchdown reception and returned a kickoff 75 yards for another TD.

Clay Price, Lindale: On a night when Lindale knocked off three-time defending state champion Carthage 33-21, the Eagles quarterback rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for an 81-yard score in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Garrett Smallwood, Van: In the Vandals’ 51-18 win against Brownsboro, the Vandals quarterback finished with 451 yards of total offense. He completed 13 of 17 passes for 359 yards and four touchdowns, plus carried the ball nine times for 92 yards and another score.

Hunter Taylor, Whitehouse: In the 59-49 loss to Chapel Hill, the senior quarterback was on pace to break the state’s single-season passing record before settling for 500 yards and five touchdowns. He also scored on a 47-yard run.

Andrew Tucker, Chapel Hill: On a night when both offenses were explosive, the senior running back accounted for 253 total yards (157 rushing, 96 receiving) and scored twice in Class 3A top-ranked Chapel Hill’s victory over Whitehouse.
