WILLS POINT — Patrick Mahomes finished with a game-high 29 points to help Whitehouse get past Sherman, 68-65, in a Class 4A bi-district boys basketball playoff Tuesday night at Wills Point High School.
Mahomes scored 17 points in the first half and remained consistent throughout the night, helping the Wildcats (20-10) advance to an area matchup against the winner between Elgin and West Mesquite.
Sherman completed the season with a 15-16 record.
The game capped a doubleheader matching neighboring districts. The opener featured Kilgore outlasting Greenville, 61-59, in overtime in the Bulldogs’ first postseason appearance since 1982.
Whitehouse-Sherman
Back in the fall, the Whitehouse football team was eliminated from the postseason by Sherman. The Wildcats got payback with Mahomes leading the charge, but weren’t able to pull away from the Bearcats after building a 10-point lead in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Mahomes scored his final basket of the game to give Whitehouse a 61-54 lead with 2:34 remaining. Sherman, however, closed the gap to 63-60 with 1:07 left and to 66-63 with less than a minute to go.
Whitehouse’s Jaylon Dews, who finished with 14 points, made it a two-possession game on a pair of free throws with five seconds left.
Whitehouse’s Jake Parker contributed 13 points. He, Dews and Mahomes are sophomores.
Sherman was led by fellow sophomore Tre Mask, who scored 24 points.
Kilgore-Greenville
After waiting 20 years for a playoff game, Kilgore’s fans were able to enjoy a memorable contest after the game was sent into overtime. And with the victory, the Bulldogs advance to take on the winner between Red Oak and Manor in the area round.
Kilgore’s Jerrick Massenburge finished with a game-high 21 points, while K.B. Brisendine and Sharod Kincade contributed 10 points apiece.
Greenville was led by Kenneth Neal and Dartanon Wilson, who finished with 18 points and 14 points, respectively.
