Mabry’s double-double not enough for Robert E. Lee boys in hoops loss

LONGVIEW – In his final high school game, Robert E. Lee senior Kirby Mabry scored 16 points and pulled down 19 rebounds.
It would’ve been enough to get him a win if not for the exploits of another senior for the Longview. Kyle Shields drained seven 3-pointers to lead Longview past REL 56-52 in both teams’ season finale Tuesday at Lobo Coliseum.
The Red Raiders finish with a 7-20 record and were 1-13 in District 11-6A play.
Longview completes its season at 9-18 and 4-10 in 11-6A.
“We had our chances, it just didn’t bounce our way tonight,” REL coach Alan Simmons said. “We ended up with 15 turnovers, but we turned it over in bunches. It was kind of a microcosm of our season; we’d make a run and then have some untimely turnovers.
“Bottom line is the guys didn’t quit. They kept coming back and gave us an opportunity to win. Before the game I challenged our guys not to walk off the floor with any regrets, so I was proud of them for doing that.”
