LONGVIEW — Despite playing a man down for more than half the match, the John Tyler Lions remained perfect in the Longview tournament with a 3-0 win over Hallsville on Friday.
Abner Barrerra got JT (2-1) on the board after scoring off a free kick, coming before a red card sent a Lions starter to the bench for the rest of the match.
Freshman Aaron Alonso scored both John Tyler goals in the second half.
“We have two shutouts so we’re pitching a shutout in this tournament so far,” Lions coach Howard Story said. “The defense is really coming together for us and our midfield is clicking. We’re playing good possession ball and it’s hard for the other team to score if they don’t have the ball.”
Daniel Montoya, Luis Melendez and Alex Andrade all shared time in goal for John Tyler.
The Lions continue play in the tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday against Pittsburg with a spot in the group final on the line.
JT’s junior varsity team remained unbeaten in the Longview JV tournament with a 4-1 victory over Lindale. Jose Perez scored twice and Luis Duran and Luis Lizalde scored for the Lions, who play Hallsville at 9 a.m. Saturday.
