Fairfield stole the show at the 21st Annual Tyler Lee Cross Country Classic. Competing in the Class 3A-1A two-mile race on the course at UT Tyler, the Fairfield girls claimed the top five spots to overwhelm the competition.
The Lady Eagles finishers were overall race winner Abby Chaidez (12:10.57), Jaida Smith (12:17.97), Morgan Carevic (12:19.39), Jennifer Reed (12:35.01) and Sarie Hill (12:44.51).
“That’s almost unheard of,” said Dennis Baker, Lee coach and meet director. “To go 1-2-3-4-5 and have a perfect score; that never happens.”
The meet featured 50 teams on Saturday morning and was comprised of six races with host Lee running in the 5A-4A Open 5K races. Lady Raiders junior Abby Halbrook was the defending champion, but the UIL increased the distance this year from two miles to 5K for 5A and 4A.
Baker wasn’t sure how Halbrook would fare at the new distance.
It was no contest.
Halbrook won the girls race by nearly a minute.
“She pretty much just blew away the field,” Baker said of Halbrook’s win.
Halbrook won in a time of 19:26.04 with Angela Dees of Kaufman (20:17.17) second and Christina Nelson of Pine Tree (21:07.49) in third.
As a team, the Lee girls were fifth overall, helped by Halbrook and Allison Sanders (21:58.67) finishing in the top 10.
Lufkin Hudson won the boys 5A-4A race despite going up in classification for this meet. Baker said “it showed the mettle of Hudson” that the Hornets were able to compete with and defeat the larger schools.
The Robert E. Lee boys finished sixth, which thrilled Baker.
“That was a real bright spot for us,” Baker said. “We beat Longview and they were the defending district champion last year.”
Whitehouse’s Troy Hayden was the overall winner in the 5A-4A 5K race, finishing in a time of 15:35.51.
Taking top honors in the Boys 3A-1A 5K race was Scotty Sprinkle (16:54.91) of Central High School.
