John Tyler running back Roderick Hawkins Jr. and Lions head coach Ricklan Holmes earned superlative honors to lead a JT-dominated All-District 7-5A Division I football team, the league’s coaches announced.
Voting was done by the district coaches.
Hawkins, a senior standout, was voted Offensive Player of the Year. The 5-8, 195-pound speedster totaled 1,418 yards and 13 touchdowns on 176 carries. That’s an average of 8.1 yards per carry.
Holmes, who led the Lions to the district championship and a 10-3 record, was voted Coach of the Year.
The former JT Lion, Oklahoma State Cowboy and New England Patriot standout just competed his seventh season as head coach of JT in which he has led Cujo to six playoff appearances and four district championships. Holmes led the Lions to the fourth round of the playoffs this season. He has a career record of 66-23 and has led JT to 10-plus-win seasons four times.
Seth McGowan, Mesquite Poteet’s star running back, was voted the district’s Most Valuable Player, while Poteet safety Jalen Hodo was named Defensive Player of the Year.
McGowan, a 5-11, 210-pound junior, is one of the most highly recruited running backs in the nation. He gained 1,614 yards and scored eight TDs on 218 carries, an average of 7.4 per tote.
