LIBERTY CITY — A 14-point swing late in the contest turned the tide and lifted the Gladewater Bears to a 28-16 win over the Sabine Cardinals on Friday in District 8-3A Division I action.
After Gladewater stopped Sabine short on fourth and goal with just under five minutes to play and the Bears leading by just five points, Eligia Carter broke loose on a 96-yard run and Christian Lacey booted the PAT to make it a 12-point contest and seal the deal.
Gladewater improves to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in district play heading into next week’s showdown against Tatum. Sabine drops to 5-4 and 2-3.
Sabine took the early lead when Landon McKinney scored on a 10-yard run just over two minutes into the contest, but the Bears answered with a 6-play, 49-yard drive to tie the contest at 6:52 of the opening frame.
A 30-yard field goal by Fernando Jaimes moved Sabine back in front with 37 seconds showing on the first quarter clock to give the Cardinals a 10-7 lead, but the Bears got two quick touchdowns in the second quarter and never trailed again.
The first TD came on the first play of the second quarter when D.J. Allen went up top to Jailyn Robertson for 55 yards.
A minute later, the Gladewater defense got into the scoring act when Christian Holmes returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown as the Bears went in front 21-10.
Jaimes booted field goals of 26 yards in the second quarter and 40 yards in the third period to keep it close, but Carter put things away with his long TD run late.
Gladewater hosts Tatum and Sabine visits White Oak next week to close out the regular season.
