BROWNSBORO — The Bears made their coach Brent Smith’s 200th career win memorable as Gage Wehrmann hit a layup at the buzzer for a 50-48 victory over the Wills Point Tigers on Tuesday in a District 14-4 boys basketball game.
The Bears called a timeout with 4.8 seconds on the clock and called the play and the team executed for the win. Wehrmann took the ball near mid-court and took the ball inside for the layin as the buzzer sounded.
“It feels good and we needed this win to stay in the district race,” said Smith, who coached at Troup before coming to Brownsboro. “The kids just kept fighting. We were down eight early, but they wouldn’t quit.”
Tylor Johnson led the Bears with 20 points with Wehrmann adding 15.
Also scoring for Brownsboro (15-12, 3-3) were Aidan Hardin (8), Malik English (5) and Ty Tiillson (2).
Savion Kellum led the Tigers (9-17, 0-6) with 18 points. Kash Adams, Coby Bennett and Zane Coffman all hit seven points for the Tigers. Also scoring were Jaquez Thompson (4), Jacob Sanford (3) and Tyler Dryman (2).
Brownsboro hosts Athens on Friday and Wills Point hosts Mabank. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
