Bishop Gorman fends off late rally by Eustace

The Bishop Gorman Crusaders used a strong first half and held off a late rally from Eustace on the second night of the 10th Annual Azalea Orthopedics and Texas Spine and Joint Hospital Tyler Football Classic, winning 24-10 Friday at All Saints’ Mewbourne Field.

Gorman was led by the rushing duo of Ethan Milton with 92 yards and Josh Johnson tallying 86 yards on 14 carries.



The Crusaders scored two rushing touchdowns in the second period to pull away as Michael Goodwin rushed two yards and Josh Johnson ran 22 yards with one second left in the half to give the Cru a 17-0 halftime lead.

Martin Guzman added a 33-yard field goal in the opening quarter to give Gorman a 3-0 advantage.

Gorman (1-0) took advantage of a fumble recovery by Jordan Morales at the Eustace 38-yard line and Goodwin found Judah Bell one-on-one down the visitors sideline for a 26-yard touchdown to push the advantage to 24-0 with 8:33 left in the third quarter.

The momentum switched to the purple side of the field for the last half of the third period as the Bulldogs’ Micah Stone recovered a Crusader fumble at the Gorman 27.

Eustace used two runs from Quentin Parks and one from Stone to set up the final 10 yards for quarterback Keenan Hargest for a 1-yard touchdown to pull the Bulldogs within 24-7 with 2:31 left in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs forced a Crusader punt on the next possession and the snap sailed over the punters’ head for a safety to cut the deficit to 24-10.

Gorman received a fumble recovery from Reed Navara and a fumble recovery and interception from Blake Johnson.

Eustace had a fumble recovery from Jordan Boles.

Parks led the Bulldogs in rushing with 67 yards on 10 carries.

Goodwin passed for 98 yards and a rushing and passing touchdown and Bell had four catches for 68 yards.
