ATHENS  In a 6-1 decision on Monday, Athens ISD trustees agreed to spend just over $4.1 million to build a new press box at Bruce Field.

District officials declined to comment on Tuesday, but documents show that more than $2.3 million of the total project cost will come from maintenance fund balance. Another $600,000 in capital projects money will be used, and the other $1.2 million will come from unused bond revenue. Ghallager Construction Services of Richardson was awarded the bid.

In a November story in the Athens Daily Review, AISD spokesperson Toni Clay wrote that renovated Bruce Field drew several football playoff games from around the region after none were scheduled there in the previous two years.

And then-head football coach and athletic director Paul Essary estimated an attendance average of about 2,500 visitors for smaller schools’ games and up to 6,000 for the larger ones. Each playoff game brought the district $3,100 to $3,500 depending on the size of the schools.

As for the press box, Essary and other officials have said that a new one is needed to continue drawing larger schools to Athens for playoff games.
