Athens clinches playoff spot

ATHENS — Athens Hornets punched their ticket into the playoffs Friday with a 56-14 win over neighboring Mabank.

The Hornets remain on top of District 15-3A and undefeated at 8-0 and 3-0.



Athens jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter advantage on touchdown runs of 8 yard by Logan Fuller and 31 yards by Ladarius Jordan and a 10-yard Anthony Sanderts to Chris Jefferson scoring pass.

The Hornets added 21 more in the second quarter on a 30-yard TD by Jordan and scoring carries of 56 and 5 yards by Fuller.

Mabank (2-6, 1-2) did find the end zone during the quarter on a 14-yard run by Garrett Holcomb to trail 42-7 at half.

The two teams traded TDs in the third with Athen’s Travon Fuller taking the opening kickoff back 85 yards for a score. Dylan Schneider scored on 7-yard run with 7:13 remaining to make it 49-14.

Jordan, who finished the game with 87 yards on just six carries, closed out the scoring in the game for Athens on a 9-yard run with 4:38 left in the third.

Fuller was the leading rusher for the Hornets with 183 yards on 19 carries.
