ARP - In the battle of Tigers, Arp held on to defeat Troup 19-13 in a District 9-3A Division II contest at Bill Herrington Tiger Stadium on Friday night.
Troup’s quarterback Weslee Ross connected with Colton Whitsell with 3:45 left to play to cut the Arp advantage to 19-13.
Arp’s Caleb Wright recovered the onside kick attempt by Troup.
Arp started the drive with 3:40 left on the contest with a Skyler Hotaling, who was unable to stay in bounds and Troup’s Marquill Davis stopped Tyler Stewart on third down for a 1-yard loss. Arp was going for it on fourth-and-1, however they were called for illegal procedure and set the squad back. Arp then punted and the ball kicked off the backs of the blockers and Troup was in business at the Arp 36-yard line with 2:59 left.
Troup went backwards after an incomplete pass and an intentional grounding cost the team 17 yards. On third-and-37 after two penalties and another incompletion, Troup punted. Demontre Wade rushed for the first down and the game was in the books for Arp.
In the first half, the Troup defense forced an Arp fumble and Jim Christopher recovered the loose ball.
Troup went on a 13-play drive capped off with 1-yard run by Trent Allen. Allen rushed for 44 yards of the 74-yard drive to put Troup 6-0 after the kick failed with 2:19 left in the first period.
Arp would turn things around in the second period when the team answered with a 15-play drive with Hotaling scoring on 12-yard dash down the visiting Tiger sideline.
Ford Merritt added the extra point for a 7-6 Arp advantage with 6:52 left before halftime
Arp’s defense produced a three-and-out and gave its offense the ball at midfield.
Arp’s offense then produced an 11-play scoring drive when Kayce Medlock scored from 1-yard out. Troup blocked the PAT and the half ended with Arp leading 13-6.
Mitch Adams had a fumble recovery for Troup.
Arp’s Medlock had a fumble recovery in his end zone to prevent a Troup score.
Arp (7-2, 4-1) visits Harleton next, while Troup (4-4, 2-2) plays host to Waskom on Friday.
