Amie leads Robert E. Lee past Corsicana, 2-0 start to season

CORSICANA – Robert E. Lee junior quarterback Chance Amie passed for 190 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 119 yards and three scores in a 34-20 win over Corsicana Friday at Tiger Stadium.
“It was really a learning experience. We came out tonight and struggled a little and had to put up a fight the whole game,” said Amie, whose efforts have helped REL start 2-0. “They gave us a good fight and we are just really happy that we came out with a W.”
Lee senior Keashun Davis caught seven passes for 127 yards and a touchdown with Isaiah Davison finishing with three catches for 30 yards and a score.
A week after running the ball at will against Marshall, the Red Raiders found it more difficult against a determined Corsicana defense. Jordan Printers finished with 87 yards on 13 carries, a lot of that coming on a 56-yard run in the first quarter.
Lee led 20-6 at halftime thanks to Printer’s long run setting up Amie’s first scoring run (5), followed by a 3-yard touchdown run from Amie and 10-yard scoring strike to Johnson.
Corsicana (1-1) won its opener by scoring in overtime and the Tigers tried to make things interesting for Lee in the fourth quarter. With REL leading 34-13 and looking to put the game away, Corsicana’s Desmond Hawkins stripped the REL ball carrier and went the other for a 60-yard return.
The only reason it wasn’t a touchdown was the hustle of Amie back to bring him down at the 23. Corsicana took it in from there, capped by a 1-yard run from Daveon Crawford to make it 34-20.
The Tigers were threatening again in the final minute, driving to Lee’s 6 before an interception by Kaleb Hawkins stopped the rally and sealed the win.
Corsicana quarterback Sam Gilfillan finished with 247 yards passing, nearly all of it coming in the second half, and a touchdown to Trevor Denbow, who finished with four catches for 116 yards.
REL coach Clayton George has won his first two games in charge, but said it wasn’t without mistakes and Lee needs to keep improving.
“We just want to come out and win every game and score more points than they do,” George said. “We did that tonight, so we are going to enjoy this. We have to come back tomorrow and watch the film, grade it and make our corrections and get a lot better for a good Nacogdoches team.”
The Red Raiders face the Dragons at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
