5A Baseball: Corsicana rallies by Lindale in area round

CORSICANA — Corsicana rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a four-run deficit as the Tigers defeated the Lindale Eagles, 9-5, on Thursday in a Class 5A area one-game baseball playoff.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but was moved to Thursday due to weather concerns.



Lindale (23-10) fell behind 1-0 before going on top 5-1 with three runs in the third and two in the fourth. However, seven walks hurt the Eagles.

Kam Wheeler had two hits, including a double, to pace the Lindale attack. Matt Aubuchon, Landon Chaney, Cody Pike, Mason Hammonds and Jacob Philpot all had singles for the District 15-5A champions.

Aubuchon, Chase Rozell and Staton Dudley each had an RBI with Chaney, Pike, Wheeler, Hammonds and Philpot all scoring runs.

The Tigers (23-8) were led by Devan Lindsey’s 3 for 4 outing, which included a home run. Miguel Luevano added a triple with Hunter Autrey hitting a double. Micah Burke had two singles with Caydon Rash and Fransico Orzco adding singles.

Luevano drove in three runs with Lindsey plating two.

The Eagles used four pitchers — Landon Chaney (2 innings, 2 hits, 1 run), Philpot (2⅔ innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 4 strikeouts, 4 walks), Brandon Burkel (⅔ inning, 3 hits, 5 runs, 2 strikeouts, 2 walks) and Wheeler (⅔ inning, 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk).

Kolby Kinkade was the third Tiger pitcher, throwing the final three innings, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out two. Burke pitched the first three innings (4 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, 3 strikeouts, 1 walk). Lindsey then tossed an inning (2 hits, 1 run, 0 earned, 1 strikeout, 1 walk).

Corsicana, the runner-up in District 14-5A, advances to play either Sulphur Springs or Joshua in the regional quarterfinals. Sulphur Springs defeated Joshua 3-2 on Thursday to take a 1-0 in the best-of-three series.
